Colt's jay turns from hero to Villain in draw

For a while it looked as though Hotels would welcome new coach Robert Calderon to their ranks with a positive result against the leaders of the First Division, but their hopes was wiped out at the end when Jay Bean netted the equaliser for Colts with just 11 minutes of extra time left.

It might have been a fluke goal, but it was a crucial blow in this FA Cup quarter-final at Southampton Oval to force a replay again this week.

With defeat seemingly staring Colts in their face forward Ellington Weldon, racing through the middle, clashed with two defenders with the ball bouncing into the direction of Bean who nodded it into goal from just a few yards.

Colts, who at times looked pathetically inadequate when they attacked, received a psychological blow when an own goal by centre-half Chris Wright had them trailing just three minutes into extra time.

The goal came after Coolridge Bell raced down the left flank and crossed into the middle but Wright, with striker Ricky Hill and skipper Eugene Simmons closing in, firmly steered the ball into his own goal.

But the mishap only gave Hotels a lead they deserved for holding a decisive edge over their opponents during most of the game.

With Myron Piper and Simmons prominent in the middle Hotels were able to pin down the defence with some fine attacking, but they too had difficulty getting shots off like Colts did much of the time.

It was because of the breakdown of both attacks that the first half did not produce any goals. But Colts had chances through Mark Ray and skipper Craig Smith while Piper and Bell were close for Hotels.

The best chance of the half was created by Hill when he headed a Chris Sabir cross from a free kick toward goal only to have Derek Wright clear it off the line seconds before the break.

Quincey Aberdeen added energy and ideas to the Colts attack after 61 minutes when he came on for Leonard Hypolite, but it was Aberdeen who blew an easy chance after minutes later when he miskicked a cross by Dennis Williams from just 12 yards.

Hotels, continuing their straightforward approach to the game and offering little more than fight and determination, held Colts in check and countered with strong runs down the flanks, which eventually led to crosses that were cleared.

Colts came alive after 70 minutes and Harrison Trott and Jay Bean put efforts wide.

Hotels regained a grip of the proceedings when Clifton Anderson came on as a substitute for Vincent Chaves and it was Anderson who supplied Hill with a beautiful cross that the striker headed and watched in agony as Derek Wright again cleared off the line.

After Hotels went ahead, Colts fought hard for the equaliser and got rewarded for not giving up.

But scorer Bean will have to sit out the replay as he was shown the red card by referee Keith Smith after confronting the officials at the end of the game.
