Confident Colts crush hotels
First Division leaders Devonshire Colts showed their veteran opponents who were the true masters in this FA Cup quarter-final replay at Somerset CC last night.
Hotels did well to hold the young Colts' team to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Southampton Oval, but Colts never once allowed them to take the initiative this time around and virtually had things sewn up by the interval when they had built a commanding 4-1 lead. Colts added another late goal in the second half and there could have been more.
The first-half goals came from Mark Ray (2), Ellington Weldon and Harrison Trott while skipper Craig Smith got the lone tally in the second half. Hotels' first-half goal came from a penalty by centre-back Derek Bell.
Just as the game started a downpour came and the players had to struggle through a steady drizzle for the rest of the night, but it was Colts who seemed to master the often treacherous conditions better.
Ray struck after just six minutes, slamming home a rebound after Weldon and Yul Wade had combined. Bell got the equaliser from the spot after 16 minutes when Wade fouled Ricky Hill, but Ray re-established the one-goal lead for Colts after 24 minutes when he hit home another rebound from close range after Weldon shot at goalkeeper Randy Darrell.
Hotels managed a few isolated raids that saw two shots put wide by Hill and Bell, but Colts were well in charge with Weldon hitting the post after 28 minutes.
Colts were once again rewarded for out-hustling Hotels when Trott struck home a cross by Smith to make it 4-1 at the half.
Hotels were unable to find any rhythm in the second half and even goalkeeper Darrell looked sadly out of touch. Hill and Bell blew chances within 10 minutes of the restart but afterward it was all pressure from Colts who pinned down defence for long spells.
Smith exposed the jitters in Darrell when he made it 5-1 from a snap chip shot taken 18 yards that the goalkeeper could only help to palm into the roof of the net after 74 minutes. A much harder effort from Smith a minute later however from 20 yards was brilliantly tipped over by Darrell.
