Coventry city keen to sign young talent
summer, says Bermuda resident Mark Georgevic who is a shareholder at the Premier League club.
Georgevic, who helped arrange the trials for Philip Clarke and Neil Paynter, spoke to manager Bobby Gould recently and was told how impressed he was by their attitudes. Gould expressed interest in taking over younger players for trials in the future, saying that one of the things against Paynter and Clarke was their age. Paynter is 24 and Clarke 25.
"Having spoken to Gould he felt it would take about 18 months for them to adjust and at the end of that there was still no guarantee they would make it,'' said Georgevic.
"What he did say is that if we could send him some players with the same attitude, fitness and ability as these two, between 18 and 20, it would be more likely he could take them so that in 18 months they would be at the same level as the youth players coming through. He said they were more likely to succeed than someone 24.
"Take Shawn Goater for example, he went over at 17 and had a couple of years at Manchester United.
"If there are some talented 18, 19 or 20 year olds interested then now is the time to start performing in the local leagues, showing the ability, attitude and keenness. Hopefully next July I'll be able to get a couple of people trials, if Bobby Gould is still in charge. But they've got to prove themselves in Bermuda first.'' One player who Georgevic thinks could make it in the Premier League is Goater, whose performance he was impressed with against Antigua in the World Cup qualifier recently at the National Stadium.
"Shawn has adjusted well and maybe he's ready to move onto bigger and better things,'' said Georgevic. "Hopefully he'll get the chance to play in the Premier Division.
"He is best suited, I think, to playing behind the front two. I don't know if Rotherham will use him in that position.'' Bermuda's success in the World Cup is likely to have clubs showing interest in its top scorer. "When he gets over there people will be looking at him, hopefully Coventry City,'' said Georgevic.
Goater, who returned to his club this week, is on a week-to-week contract with Rotherham, in the hope of attracting the attention of a club in a higher division. In the three and a half years since he made his senior debut for Bermuda, Goater has scored 13 goals, four of them in the World Cup.
