Darrell, Lewis off to earn coaching badge
Lewis leave for England today for a coaching course which they hope will help them guide Bermuda to victory in the forthcoming second qualifying round of the World Cup.
Already holders of the English qualifying badge the pair will this time attempt to achieve the more prestigious full badge certificate which former Bermuda national team coaches Carlton (Pepe) Dill and Roddy Burchall attained in the late 1970s.
The departure of Darrell and Lewis conflicts with the intense training schedule undertaken by the squad which has resumed preparation for the World Cup this week after a short summer break.
Darrell, however, doesn't feel that the interruption will seriously hamper the squad -- even though there are plans now to have their next World Cup match played at home on September 20, giving Darrell and Lewis just a few weeks to work with the team when they return.
"We took this all into consideration -- we thought the three weeks we will have with them upon returning would be satisfactory,'' said Darrell.
During their absence the national squad will be supervised by Robert Calderon, former coach of Dandy Town, while assisting him will be Gywnn Williams and Nick Jones.
"The squad will be in good hands -- Robert and I think fairly much along the same lines anyway,'' said Darrell. "Gwyn and Nick have been involved with the squad on a regular basis, Gwyn working out with the goalkeepers and Nick doing practically everything else including putting them through strenuous physical exercises.'' Darrell will be aiming for his fourth international coaching certificate, in addition to the preliminary badge.
However, while he is focusing on the full badge course, Darrell will also be keeping a sharp eye on the remaining World Cup first-round game between Jamaica and Trinidad which is scheduled for Kingston on August 16. The winner will move into the second round with Bermuda, Canada and El Salvador.
Meanwhile the Bermuda Football Association have announced a squad of 32 which will train for the World Cup. In addition to those playing professionally in England the list includes new players (goalkeepers) Andre Hendrickson and Timothy Figuerido, (midfielder) Corey Simmons and (defenders) Shannon Burgess and Lloyd Christopher.
The full squad: Paul Cann, Lloyd Christopher, Dwayne Adams, Carlyle Crockwell, Kevin Grant, Albert Caisey, Wayne Campbell, Leroy Stevens, Shawn Smith, Neil Robinson, Irving Burgess, Elliott Jennings, Albert Smith, Vorhees Astwood, Kyle Lightbourne, Phillip Clarke, Neil Paynter, Dennis Brown, Sammy Swan, Kenny Thompson, Shawn Goater, Meshach Wade, Kentoine Jennings, David Bascome, Devar Boyles, Corey Hill, Damon Wade, Shannon Burgess, Timothy Figuerido, Ty Williams, Andre Hendrickson, Corey Simmons.
Those members who are in Bermuda are asked to attend a special training session at National Stadium tomorrow morning starting at 9.30.
