DeCouto, Purcell lift Four Ball title

weekend when, teamed with Dave Purcell, he clinched the Bermuda Four Ball Championship at Port Royal yesterday.

Winner of last week's inaugural Black Masters Classic, DeCouto and partner Purcell held off a final round challenge from former winners Henry Ascento and Bill Pitt jr. to win by two shots.

DeCouto and Purcell carded 284 for the 72-hole tournament after firing a two-over-par 73 yesterday, their worst score during the four days.

Ascento and Pitt finished with an even par 71 for a total of 286, and a further three shots back on 289 were 1991 winners Dennis Connors and Dan Rourke who posted 73 yesterday.

In the net division, Eldon Raynor and Winston Trott (266) won by four shots over George Beaudette and William Shelton (270) with Adam Diel and Clive Hook (275) taking third place on retrogression.

The women's title went, for the second successive year, to Judithanne Outerbridge and Joan Connors (218) who pipped former two-time winners Madeline Joell and Janina Jacobs (220) by two shots.

Joell and Jacobs had led by a single stroke going into yesterday's final round but could only manage a three-over par 75 compared to Outerbridge and Connors' even-par 72.

Third place went to Terri Foote and Joanie Roberts on 229.

Net winners, but only on retrogression, were Donnette Caisey and Donna Jones over Rhonda Switzer and Dolly Winwick after both carded 208. Third were Brenda Burchall and Cecile Stubbings (210).
