Eagles fight back to win

A sensational fightback in the second half saw Eagles turn a 2-0 deficit into a amazing victory in the Shield final at National Stadium yesterday. The eastenders stamped their authority on the game by gaining a decisive edge on goals by Keenan Butterfield and Otis Minors, but Eagles -- inspired by an outburst of heated verbal exchanges in the changing room during the interval -- clawed their way into contention.

Thanks to goals by Desmond Burgess, Lamaul Crofton and Stephen Burrows, Eagles finished flying high.

St. David's had more of the ball in the first half and took a deserved lead through Butterfield after 35 minutes, the big striker scoring from close in from Angelo Cannonier's cross.

Eagles attacked less frequently but one big miss came when Burrows failed to head home a Marco Butterfield cross from close range after 26 minutes.

When St. David's made it 2-0 just 15 seconds into the second half -- the goal coming when Minors hit home a rebound after a Butterfield shot was slapped out by goalkeeper Adrian Burrows -- one feared a walkover. But Eagles refused to yield. They stormed back and made it 2-1 after 50 minutes when centre-back Burgess scored from a free-kick just outside the penalty box and then Crofton got the equaliser after 61 minutes, thanks to a lapse in defence by St.

David's. Burrows got what proved to be the clincher after 70 minutes, scoring from a rebound after substitute Rodre Wilson's drive proved too hot to handle for goalkeeper George O'Brien Jr.

The eastenders roared back with two raids near the end, but Butterfield blasted over the bar from 14 yards and Minors watched in agony as his fierce shot was brilliantly tipped over the bar eight minutes from time.
