East Enders fail to cash in on fast start

St. George's and Boulevard will have to wait at least another couple of weeks for their first league wins, after this draw at Wellington Oval left them near the foot of the standings.

But the good news for both teams is that the four teams that picked up wins last weekend -- Somerset Eagles, Somerset, Vasco and Dandy Town -- all dropped points yesterday, which leaves just a three point gap from top to bottom in the standings.

St. George's had the best of starts when they broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Quinton Francis, switched to midfield to allow Franklyn Greaves to return to the middle of the defence alongside Neil Paynter, ran through the Boulevard defence onto a Ricky Hill through ball and planted a firm shot inside the far post.

And the home team could have been leading by two goals before the Boulevard equaliser came in the dying minutes of the first half.

In the 22nd minute a smart move involving Carlos Greaves, Clay Smith and Dean Bailey on the left resulted in Smith getting through to meet Bailey's pass and supply a perfect cross for Ricky Hill to rise high and send in a header which 'keeper Hewonnie Brown tipped over the bar.

Boulevard enjoyed a good period of pressure late in the half as St. George's struggled to hang on, though again they almost eased the pressure with a second goal. This time Bailey intercepted a pass, fed the ball to Smith who in turn set up Stevie Dickinson for a shot that rolled just inches wide.

The goal that threatened finally came in the 43rd minute when the St. George's defence wasn't able to clear a Boulevard raid and Neil (Diamond) Robinson volleyed a left footed shot from the edge of the box past Troy Hall.

Both teams had good chances to clinch the match during a tense second half.

Boulevard controlled play early on as St. George's stood firm defensively and then the home team came charging back late in the match with Albert Caisey clearing off the line in the 78th minute.

A Dickinson cross on the left caused problems in the 84th minute and this time the ball fell perfectly for Clay Smith near the edge of the penalty area. His left foot swung and connected and in the best save of the match Brown turned the goalbound effort over the top.
