Equestrian starlets in action
Sunday night.
The pair, who ride out of Inwood Stables and Spicelands respectively, are representing Bermuda in the fifth round of the Caribbean Equestrian Assocations Junior Jumping Competition which takes place on the Island at the weekend.
Teams of two riders will be jetting in from Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad to compete against Bermuda on horses loaned for the competition.
"We hope they do well, it's only a small competition with two competitors from each country,'' said Mike Cherry, head of the Bermuda Equestrian Federation. "It's good exposure, because it gives them a chance to compete against others that they don't normally compete against, but it's not a high level international competition.
"Both went over to compete in Canada and did very well in the shows on the Canadian circuit.
"They are two of our better junior riders, so we're expecting good things of them.'' The event consists of four rounds over two days at the National Equestrian Centre, with the course kept the same and the eight riders riding all the animals in turn. "It is a stepping stone type event,'' said Cherry, who added that spectators would yet be impressed by the standard of the young riders.
"It's showjumping, so they have to jump clear, fast rounds and each of the eight competitors ride on Saturday and the Sunday morning.'' Guadeloupe and Jamaica are also involved in the tournament, but in order to keep the competition to just a quartet of horses at any one time each country competes four times.
The final rounds will be held in Jamaica in November.
Currently, Guadeloupe are in first place, with Jamaica second, Antigua third and Bermuda fourth. Trinidad and Barbados make up the remaining places.
Bermuda's first competition saw them travel to Guadeloupe in April when Christy Holder finished first and Tiffany Thorne seventh.
The following month Emily Banks and Christy Holder flew to Trinidad where Emily came second and Christy sixth.
The riders selected to travel to Jamaica next month are Tiffany Thorne and Christy Holder.
This weekend's competition starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with the final rounds at 9 a.m. the following day.
