Equestrianism

Show Jumping competition on Sunday at the National Equestrian Centre at Vesey Street starting at 1 p.m.

However, the day's activity will get under way earlier with a Clear Round Jumping competition at 9 a.m., which will be open to anyone. The starting height for ponies will be two feet, six inches.

There are 16 entries for the main competition and it is hoped that defending champion John Deuss will be here to compete.

Frances Weddup, second a year ago, is hopeful of improving on that performance while Sara Smith is also aiming to improve on her third-place finish a year ago.

Another rider expecting to do well is Melissa Pereech who was fourth last year on her speedy mount Tia Maria. She was faster than the winner but her 11 faults hurt her badly. Other local riders expected to do well are Dale Rochester and Julie Pitman.

This year there are 16 countries competing with over 200 riders being involved. The six-round competition can be held over any three days between January 1 and December 31.

The total faults and times of each second round are used to calculate the overall results. Last year, Deuss finished 21st overall with three faults whereas the top 18 riders all had six clear rounds.

The competition enables riders from different countries to compete against each other over identical courses without leaving home soil.

The second round will be held on Saturday, March 27 starting at 1 p.m. as part of the Bermuda Horse and Pony Association Spring Show and the third and final round will take place on Sunday, March 28 at 11 a.m. before the Driving Show.

MOTOCROSS SCR Two classes were settled during the penultimate round of Pepsi Motocross Nationals last Sunday. Father and son speedsters Donnie and Devin Moss have secured enough points to build comfortable leads over all competitors in their respective classes.

Donnie Moss easily clinched his division because his opponent failed to show.

Devin Moss notched three victories in the 125 `C' category riding a Suzuki.

Leroy Maxwell finished in second spot while Kyle Constable and Evan Lambert were third and fourth.

Chris Maxwell, the current 80cc leader, came under heavy pressure from top driver Kemo Simmons who is second in overall points. In the first race, Simmons and Maxwell duelled for the lead with Maxwell leading until the last lap when Simmons pulled off a daring move to leave Maxwell behind in second place and Chris Shaki Easton in third.

The order remained the same after the second race with Simmons once again the winner followed by Maxwell, Easton and Russell Burchall in fourth.

Aaron Pace suffered a nasty spill in the first race in the 125 `B' category allowing Garry Simons to register his third win this season. Justin Belboda finished in second place with Pace a distant third.

Pace recovered in the second and third races and trounced Belboda and Simons on his way to a 31-point lead over Belboda in the standings with only one round remaining.

GOLF GLF Kammy Maxfeldt won yesterday's professional championship of the Bermuda Easter Lily Invitational, but needed sudden death to offset the challenge of Cindy Ferro.

At the end of regulation play the duo stood even at 78, however, Maxfeldt seized the championship at the first play-off hole.

For her efforts, Maxfeldt claimed a $500 first prize and Ferro took home $300 as the runner-up.

Weighing in at the third position was Lisa Day, two strokes back on 80, good for $250.

Competition among the amateurs was similarly fierce as a closely bunched leader board saw Tsuyako Taido grabbed top honours by a single stroke over Lynn Crete.

Taido carded a 84 (gross) compared to 85 for Crete with Theresa Herrell close on their heels at 86.

Freedie Schwartz won the net prize, registering a 74 followed by Creete and Kathy Toohey, both on 76.
