Fans' tribute catches Bascome by surprise -- Bermudian breaks Heat record,
David Bascome was the last person to realise the significance of his goal.
Coming back from illness, the Bermudian was concentrating more on getting back to full fitness than on breaking the Harrisburg Heat's goalscoring record.
So it was with some bemusement that he cast his eyes around the Farm Show Arena as the spectators rose to their feet to applaud him during Saturday's National Professional Soccer League match against the Kansas City Attack.
"I was actually sick that game. My throat had swollen up and the only thing on my mind was trying to get myself healthy and see what I could do for the team,'' said Bascome, whose two point strike in the third quarter gave him 297 for the team and the title of the Heat's most prolific goalscorer ever.
"When I scored the crowd stood up and when I was told what it meant it was something that was quite a shock to me. (Gino) DeFlorio handed me the ball and said `Congratulations'.
"I was like `What happened?'. He said `The goal' and I was like `Oh man I had totally forgot about that','' said Bascome, who passed the mark set by Mark Pulisic -- a legend at Harrisburg and a close friend of the Bermudian's.
"They stopped the game and had the announcement and gave me a standing ovation. It was a shock at the time and only really hit me after the game. The only thing was that we lost that match so it was a bittersweet moment.'' The previous night the Heat secured their berth in the end of season play-offs with victory over Philadelphia and Bascome believed they were still celebrating mentally when they played Kansas City -- throwing away a healthy lead to crash 24-16.
"I do think it played a little bit (in the defeat). It was strange because we came out and were on top of Kansas City and were leading them 14-4 just before the half,'' he said.
"But I think what happened was we got very complacent, we felt that this should be an easy game. But nothing is easy indoors, you go down to the last whistle. We kind of came up short and it was disappointing at the end of the night,'' he said, adding: "The coached chewed on us. He was really disappointed with the performance at the end of the day. He was happy with the first-half but to end the game losing like that was more a disgrace than anything.'' However, Bascome believes some good did come out of the loss.
"What it has done, it has brought us back together and kind of knocked us off that pedestal a little bit,'' he said.
"It's good for us because it's kept us focused on the two games we have left.
Baltimore lost on Tuesday night, so we are half a game in front of them and we are trying to win the Conference title right now.
"If we win on Sunday it will give us home field advantage and if Baltimore lose their next two games we will win the Conference.'' While sticking to the adage `one game at a time', Bascome admits he can't wait for the end of season run-in.
"We have a big game this weekend against Buffalo, they have been playing really well and it's going to be a tough one for us. But we are starting to get our injured players back playing,'' he said.
"I'm really excited about our season right now. What we set out to do at the beginning of the season was firstly to make the play-offs. We have done that and the next is to try to win a championship. I know it's going to be a new season when the play-offs start but I think we have a great chance.'' David Bascome: All-time leading goalscorer for the Harrisburg Heat.
