Fast start sees Mariners ease through cup opener
A steady drizzle didn't deter either of these teams from making good of a bad situation in this early FA Cup match at Prospect that saw Mariners run out easy winners after scoring all of their goals in the first half.
Aside from isolated runs at the defence in the second half, Park United were always made to look second best against a Mariners outfit who often went forward with purpose, thanks to good performances from defender Carlos Lopes and forward Craig Dixon.
Mariners were ahead 1-0 after 14 minutes through Richard Correia and Dennis Pimental stretched that lead to 2-0 after 40 minutes before Correia wrapped it up with a third goal right on the half.
United attempted to claw their way into the game in the second half with James Braithwaite and William Isaac solid in the midfield, but Mariners held firm, limiting their opponents to six corners.
Mariners created more chances but lacked the finishing touch with Correia and Dixon both putting shots wide and over the goal from close range.
Dixon was unlucky after 85 minutes when he had a shot brilliantly palmed away by a diving Prospero Russo in United's goal.
