Front-runners come away with identical victories
Second Division leaders Vasco defanged Devonshire Cougars at St. John's field yesterday with a first half of domination, which yielded three goals and capped things off with two more in the second.
The final tally was 5-1, but could have been much worse as they also squandered a multitude of clear chances.
Anthony Bailey was the chief architect of the destruction, netting two goals, assisted by Ricky Mallory, Tony Cabral and Derek Thomas with one apiece. Devon Brangman notched a consolation strike for the visitors.
The first half was hardly contested by Cougars as Vasco spent most of it camped in their opponents' half, taking pot-shots at goalkeeper Fred Richardson.
Mallory would begin the onslaught when he beat Richardson with his effort in the sixth minute to be followed by consecutive goals from Bailey in the 19th and 45th minutes.
In between that period, Karl Roberts fired into the side netting after surging forward from his centre-back position while Paul Franco was denied by a diving stop by Richardson.
With the speed of Bailey, Mallory and Larance Durham up front Cougars were constantly at odds in defence to hold them at bay.
Up 3-0, Vasco returned for the second half as if down a goal as they tore into Cougars, notching number four when substitute Cabral headed home a right-wing cross by Anthony Bailey .
To Cougars' credit they refused to bow their heads. In fact it was they who began to dictate with substitute Troy Smith and veteran Dale Russell taking a grip of the midfield and Brangman and Dwayne Bean finding room to roam up front.
Brangman pulled one back in the 54th minute when he back-headed a Bean free kick past a bewildered Gerald Sims in goal for Vasco.
However, Thomas completed the rout as he nipped behind the defence to get on the end of a Donovan Livingston free kick and maintained his composure to slot the ball into the low right-hand corner past an exposed Richardson.
Southampton 4, BAA 0 Southampton yesterday left it until the last four minutes to convert their superiority over BAA into goals.
First, Ascento Russell added to his ealier goal with an 87th-minute strike.
And then Wendall Simons and Mitchell Raynor added their names to the scoresheet in the 89th and 90th minutes respectively.
The dismal end to BAA's day was made even worse by the 89th-minute sending-off of Wayne DeSilva.
DeSilva was given his marching orders by referee Ken Perinchief for foul and abusive language.
BAA's dramatic collapse did them little justice.
For in the first half they put up a spirited showing, blunting Southampton's firepower.
As this Second Division game dragged on, with Rangers becoming increasingly frustrated, one suspected BAA might just sneak a goal.
But those suspicions ebbed away when Russell scored in the 55th minute with a sweet header.
He then triggered the goal glut with a tap-in.
For Southampton's expectant fans it was a case of better late than never.
Wolves 2, Paget 0 Wolves kept alive their promotion hopes when a goal in each half clinched this win over Paget at Devonshire Rec. field and left them in third place.
Wolves had the perfect start when Shannon Berkeley gave them the lead after just two minutes when he scored from the edge of the box. Paget threatened to wipe out that lead but it was Wolves who scored a second goal in the 55th minute when top scorer Marlon Lindsay scored his 14th goal of the season from inside the box.
Lindsay was later cautioned by referee Chris Jones for kicking the ball away after being blown down for offside.
Paget had their goalkeeper Raymond Young taken to hospital with a leg injury in the 60th minute after falling awkwardly.
Som. Eagles 1, Social Club 4 Brothers Larry and Troy Darrell combined to score three of Social Club's goals in this win over Somerset Eagles at White Hill field.
The experienced Larry Darrell netted twice while Troy notched his 10th goal of the season. Randy Spence got the other to seal mid-table Social club's fourth win in the league. Terrence Christopher replied for Somerset Eagles in the second half.
Port Royal 3, Prospect 1 Michael Bean scored twice and schoolboy Nakia Smith got the other as Port Royal snatched both points from Prospect in the opening match at White Hill field. Lyndon Fubler replied for Prospect who missed the chance to move ahead of Devonshire Cougars in the standings.
