Furbert fires five in FA Cup thriller

(after extra time) Front men Troy Furbert and Vic Ball each netted twice in extra time to finally settle this entertaining match at Wellington Oval as Fire Service advanced to the next round of FA Cup competition.

Furbert scored an amazing five goals to lead the firemen in this elimination round tie, having served up an early warning with two goals in nine minutes at the beginning of the first half. And while Fire may not have been four goals better in the end, nobody would disagree that they were deserved winners, having stayed the course for 120 minutes.

It should have been evident to the All-Stars from the first time he touched the ball that Furbert would be a major threat, as veteran goalkeeper David (Goat) Brangman dived to his left to turn aside a left foot volley from Furbert as early as the second minute.

Steven Caines made the chance with a ball which Furbert got under control before shooting from the edge of the penalty box.

His next chance in the sixth minute broke the deadlock when another ball over the defence landed perfectly for Furbert who this time sent a scorcher into the roof of the net.

Slack marking at the back allowed Furbert to double the Fire Service lead in the 15th minute, this time when he met a cross from a corner on the left and scored with a header that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Furbert won the corner when his shot was turned around the near post by Brangman.

Only another good save by Brangman a minute later denied Furbert a hat-trick inside 10 minutes.

The All-Stars began their fightback in the 26th minute when Sinclair Smith was tripped inside the box after getting onto a James Pace through ball. New referee Allan Pearmain pointed to the spot and Cal Rayner beat Scott Quinn with a low shot to his right.

Furbert wasted a good scoring chance in the 29th minute after poor marking allowed a cross to reach him. And though the All-Stars were still in the game at 2-1 at the half, that lead was increased further just three minutes after the restart when the 28-year-old Furbert completed his hat-trick after following up on a shot that the diving Brangman could not hold and scoring with a simple tap-in.

Despite the wet conditions both teams played some good football and the All-Stars refused to give in after trailing again by a two-goal margin.

They pulled it back to 3-2 in the 65th minute when Pace's shot was blocked by the 'keeper and Sinclair Smith followed up to score with the rebound.

Eight minutes after that they were back level when Rayner scored his second penalty, when a handball was spotted after the ball had been flighted in from a corner on the left.

For the first time in the match the All-Stars began to sense victory as Fire Service faded, but captain Cal Richardson wasted two corners for All-Stars on the right side in the space of a few minutes before Brangman made another important save from Caines at the other end in the dying minutes. Then Quinn blocked Pace's effort after he had been put through.

Despite not having any substitutes to call on, Fire Service seemed to get stronger in extra time as fitness proved a telling factor.

In the fifth minute of the first period of extra time Furbert made it 4-3 when he turned and shot low past Brangman following a move which was started by midfielder Caines and also involved Ralph Scott on the right side.

Three goals came in the second period of extra time as Fire Service blew away their opponents. Ball, the coach of First Division side Devonshire Colts, made it 5-3 in the eighth minute when he beat Dennis Spencer near the halfway line and went on a long run towards goal before beating Brangman.

Furbert still had some scoring left in him and two minutes from the end he scored another well-taken effort after All-Stars had a goal disallowed for offside. Furbert beat Brangman with his left footed shot which was tucked neatly inside the 'keeper's left-hand post and then a minute from the end Ball completed the victory with a left footed shot.
