Glorious double for top woman Adams
while Karen Adams picked up her second adult women's win over the weekend on Saturday to make up for last year's second-place finish.
Smith, who like Adams competed in the Bank of Butterfield Mile on Friday night, led home the local runners in a time of 33:17 in finishing 12th overall, though the time was slightly slower than his 1992 winning time (33:03).
Smith, who holds the Bermudian record of 31:52 set in 1989, was one place and 20 seconds ahead of Tracy Wright with Mark Perry a further two places back in 15th spot, in 33:51.
"Today I wasn't looking for a time, but was just going through my base training,'' said Smith, who is gearing up for the 1996 Olympic Games.
Wright and Perry were his main competition amongst the local men as Wright set the pace for Smith and Perry by going through the first mile in 4:48, 10 seconds ahead of Smith with Perry just behind.
"Tracy took it out as usual and I caught him on the hill by Nationals and then took him at the top of the hill (past Cable and Wireless),'' Smith explained.
"After that I ran neck and neck with a foreign guy along North Shore to Frog Lane and we were pushing each other.'' Wright had a good start when he trailed the lead pack in the first mile but could not maintain it as he started to tire at the halfway mark.
"I had a bad run last night and just tried to get over that as I tried to see how long I could hang in with those guys (lead runners),'' explained Wright, who was also second behind Smith last year.
"It was kind of windy on North Shore but from here to Flatts was pretty good.
Going up Cable and Wireless hill was okay but at Flatts I started to get tired and then wanted to keep an even pace to the finish. "I saw Kavin the whole race and was about a pole length behind him but couldn't close on him. Coming up on Frog Lane I looked back and saw Mark coming, so I sprinted over the last hill and at the stadium got some distance on him. It was close between myself and Mark.'' Wright, the local winner two years ago, wants to do some more races abroad.
"But I want to get in better shape,'' he admitted.
Adams bounced back strong from her record-breaking run in the mile on Friday night, and was second overall amongst the women, and the first local female in a time of 37:53.
She was 29th overall, almost four minutes slower than first female finisher Ann Marie Letko of the United States who was 16th overall in 34:07.
"I would have liked to have done under 37 (minutes) but I was just going out to see how I felt. I was tired when I first started then ended up pretty quickly,'' said a delighted Adams.
Anna Eatherley led Adams in the first two miles before Adams passed her at the top of Store Hill. "But I knew she was with me not far behind,'' Adams said.
Eatherley, 32nd overall in 38:36, was pleased with being the third female overall.
"I went out really hard with my first mile in 5:34 and I was ahead of Karen,'' Eatherley explained.
"I did the second mile in 11:23 and then we ran together for a while and then she dropped me midway through the second mile. I tried to get her on the hills but never did.
"My best time is 36:57, so I guess I was going for that. I was third overall, so that's really good.
"I'm not far off my p.b. and nothing's going wrong so I hope to get better.'' Jeremy Ball was again the first local master, 22nd overall in 36:00 as he finished just three seconds ahead of Jim Butterfield, the second master, in 36:03.
