Goals galore as teams clinch semifinal spots
Thompson Seven-A-Side soccer tournament after resounding wins over College Boyz and Somerset respectively Wednesday at Southampton Glebe field.
The opening match saw Dandy Town upend previously unbeaten Boyz 4-2, with Troy Lewis doing the early damage, scoring twice in the first half for Town. It stayed that way until after halftime when Devarr Boyles made it 3-0.
Boyz, who topped Group A and entered the match as favourites, pulled one back through Shannon Burgess, but Walter Musson restored the three-goal margin with a tally of his own soon after. A late penalty by Shannon Morrisey created the final scoreline.
In the evening's second match, Iraklis, containing the likes of Rodney (Key) Bascome, Antoine (Baldy) Brangman and Brian (Pumpkin) Simons, pounced on their younger opponents from the outset, taking the early lead through a strike by defender Simons and wound up winning handily 4-1.
However, a lapse in concentration allowed Somerset to equalise, Steven Burchall slipping through the defence to score from close range.
Somerset's celebrations were short-lived, however, as Steven's older brother Anthony made it 2-1, netting one on the stroke of halftime.
The second half belonged to Group B champs Iraklis, who added insurance goals through Bascome and Brangman. Brangman's goal was particularly enjoyable as he weaved his way past a defender and onrushing goalkeeper Cadell Gilbert before slotting the ball home.
BOYZ UNDER PRESSURE -- College Boyz goalkeeper, Andre Hendrickson readies himself for shot from Dandy Town's Devarr Boyles. Dandy Town won the match 4-2 to move through to the semifinals.
