Golden Goal gets green light
game -- a feature destined to be one of the highlights in what is expected to be an interesting soccer season.
Tomorrow's season opener will see last year's First Division league champions Vasco taking on FA Cup champions Boulevard at BAA Field, starting at 8 p.m.
The introduction of the new sudden-death decider, along with the large number of transfers which have several prominent players moving on to new clubs, should add interest and enthusiasm for fans.
Acceptance of the Golden Goal has long been hinted at by Elroy Ratteray, chairman of the BFA's Leagues and Competitions committee, since FIFA gave their approval.
Ratteray was off of the Island yesterday but has previously said the committee were seriously looking at the rule.
The Golden Goal gained prominence when it was used for the first time internationally during the Euro '96 Championships in July.
Introduced to help promote attacking soccer, the procedure does away with the traditional extra-time of two 15-minute halves in favour of the Golden Goal, in which the first team to score during extra time is declared the winner.
