Great day for east-end clubs

Words can hardly describe the sound whipping that St. George's inflicted on an outclassed and demoralised Somerset side yesterday in frigid conditions at the Wellington Oval.

St. George's had things their way as Clay Smith scored the first league hat-trick in the First Division this season and Greg Foggo got the other.

Replying for Somerset were Kwame Tucker and Kenny Thompson.

Signs of what was to come were evident early on as Clay Smith shot just wide from 25 yards when he caught goalkeeper Winslow Williams off his line in the third minute.

As fate would have it, St. George's drew first blood in the seventh minute when Jan Cieters fed a ball to Foggo across the middle. Foggo controlled the ball and sent a perfect sideline pass to Clay Smith who cut in on goal and sent a low shot under Williams.

One minute later, St. George's suffered a defensive lapse as Somerset scored after a cross from deep into the St. George's territory by Reggie Tucker.

Tucker's pass found two Trojans streaking in on 'keeper Troy Hall who had no defensive cover on the play.

Kwame Tucker gratefully accepted the gift and forced the ball home from close range. It was his first goal since the Martonmere Cup final.

Somerset, rejuvenated after their equaliser, pushed forward into attack. They were very unlucky not to score in the 30th minute when a fine pass from Thompson to Kwame Tucker saw the teenager go in solo on the 'keeper.

But as Tucker tried to round Hall the 'keeper dove brilliantly and smothered the ball at his feet. Five minutes later, Thompson pounced on a poorly-taken free kick by Hall and rushed forward only to blast his shot straight at the 'keeper.

These two near misses by Somerset did not seem to faze St. George's as they mounted an equally dangerous attack a minute later.

Foggo chased a pass down the left flank and squared the ball from deep in the corner to Duvall Smith who dummied the ball, which rolled free past goal before being cleared.

In the 52nd minute of play, St. George's regained the lead. The goal came after they were awarded a free kick from just outside the area.

Somerset set up what looked to be an impenetrable wall consisting of seven players. But Clay Smith took the kick and curved the ball around the wall and just inside the post for his second tally.

The goal sent the St. George's fans into a wild applause and the St. George's players also began playing with a frenzy as they sensed a kill.

They were rewarded in the 57th minute with their third goal when, after a defensive clearance, Clay Smith picked up possession and swept into the Trojans half.

He was robbed of possession, but the free ball was controlled by Duvall Smith who passed to Foggo waiting on the wing. Foggo chipped the ball into the Somerset goalmouth and caught the back-tracking Williams out of position as the ball found the net.

To stem the onslaught, Somerset brought on George Bremar for Kwame Tucker and a minute later, they substituted Dwight Basden for Billy Kirkpatrick.

Somerset's play picked up dramatically. However, they could not crack the tough defensive rearguard erected by St. George's.

Clay Smith completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute when he skillfully beat four Somerset players and fired a rocket past Williams. What made his foray particularly pleasing to see was the fact that it began in midfield and ended with him on a one on one with the 'keeper.

Somerset scored a final, yet meaningless, goal five seconds from the final whistle when Thompson slotted home from close range. It served only to put some respectability into the scoreline.
