Gymnast Murphy impresses at US meet

Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs championship scheduled for Florida next week when she gave a solid performance during the region's qualifying meet in Greensboro, North Carolina last week.

A group of nine gymnasts travelled from Bermuda for the event and the highlight proved to be Murphy's all-round showing in the Intermediate Optional (10) competition that saw her finish with a score of 8.1 on the vault, 8.25 on bars, 8.0 on the beam and 8.2 on floor exercises.

Nicola White and Nikia Manders also competed in the 10 competition, both failing to qualify by narrow margins.

Katy Wright, who was unable to participate in the meet because of recent arthroscopic knee surgery, could join Murphy in the competition in Florida after a successful injury petition.

The remaining five Bermuda girls took part in the Developmental Optional (DO) competition in which there were only 30 places available from a field of 90.

All five failed to place in the top 30 and were eliminated.

However, there were some notable performances from the local girls. Christina White (8.95), Megan Aguiar (8.75), Leila Wadson (8.5) and Sasha Christensen (8.7) all managed to impress the judges with excellent beam routines and all of the girls scored well on their floor exercises.

Aguiar was the highest placed of the locals though when she finished in 43rd place.

Murphy also won a set of commemorative Atlanta 1996 Olympic pins by outlasting all of the other competitors in a handstand competition held at the end of the meet.

Accompanying the girls was Walid Mustafa, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, who has been coaching in Bermuda since last year.
