Husband and wife Brett and Sara Lane Wright recently returned solid results while competing at the Laser Mid-Winter East regatta in Sarasota, Florida.
Brett, competing in the Laser Class among moderate 15-20 knot winds and 85 degree temperatures, placed 16th out of 85 competitors, with finishes of PMS-24-19-18-18-16-11-12-38 over four days.
Winning the class was American Brett Davis, who ended 1996 ranked first in the nation.
Meanwhile, Sara Lane, racing in the 33-strong Laser Radial Class, containing men and women, finished 14th overall and third among the females. Her race results read 14-22-15-16-12-12-12-12-13.
Overall winner of the class was Eduardo Cordero, the multiple Sunfish world champion and frequent Bermuda visitor, while Rachel Dennis was the top female, placing third overall.
It was the first overseas outing for the Wrights since taking part in the CORK regatta in Canada last August.
SQUASH SQU Three former Bermuda players made their presence felt at the US National Championships recently.
Rob Thompson, ranked number one on the Island in the 1980s, won the over-40 division. Domenic Hughes, a former Bermuda professional and now a club pro in Philadelphia, took the over-35 title, while Paul Marley took the consolation crown in the over-55 event.
Meanwhile, youngster Nick Kyme completed an undefeated league season in the number one spot for Taft School in Connecticut, guiding the team to the New England Championships last week.
Kyme is likely to be ranked number three in New England schools based on his results throughout the season.
Locally, Naz Jatha and Susanne Rose narrowly defeated Norman and Lynn Furtado in the final of the Hospitality Systems Valentine Tournament.
A record 20 couples took part in four round-robin events. Winners of each group played in the knockout semi-finals: Jetha and Rose defeated Michael Swain and Lily Khaw 15-10, 15-8 while the Furtados beat Diane Longden and John Kelly 15-11, 15-13.
GOLF GLF Bill Pitt emerged as the medallist following the qualifying round of Ocean View's Club Championship.
Pitt fired a 72 at the par 70 Devonshire course in making it into the championship flight. He was followed by Claude James and Conrad Albuoy, who both carded 74, while improving youngster Aaron James also made the top flight with an impressive 79.
Among the anticipated feature matches of the first round are the clashes between Claude James and Roger Harvey, and Zane DeSilva against Winston (Coe) Trott.
A new men's winner is assured in the absence of defending champion Dave Purcell, while reigning female titlist Norriette Fox will defend her crown.
Men will play three flights, while women compete over four medal rounds on March 2, 9, 16 and 23.
Bermuda Junior Golf Association play at Castle Harbour on the weekend saw Chaka DeSilva fire 79 to take top spot in Group Five, beating out Justin Barritt by four shots. Arron James was third on 84.
In Group Four, Seamus Durkin led the way on 83 with Oliver Pitcher one shot back in second place while Ryan Mello was third on 87.
Group Three action at St. George's saw Doug Markey fire 76, edging out David Smith on retrogression. RV Pachai was one shot back on 77.
Group Two play over 12 holes saw James Cooke take top spot with 49, edging out Chris Rodriguez on retrogression. Jason Correia was third on 53.
Zachary Simmons led the way in Group One with 43. Stephen Roy followed on 47 and Timonthy Burland was third on 48.
In the Novice A programme at Southampton Princess, Laura Robinson fired a fine 35 over nine holes. Tyler Marshall was second on 38, beating out Thomas Edwards on retrogression.
In the Novice B section at Belmont, Daniel Augustus scored 25 over six holes to take top spot, seven shots ahead of Robert Hern who edged out Jason Edmunds for second on retrogression.
Tournament play takes place at Ocean View this Saturday.
