International face uphill task

take on Dallas Rockets in the second leg of the CONCACAF American Airlines Cup at National Stadium on Saturday night (7.30).

International will be hard pressed to overturn the 4-0 deficit incurred on the first leg in Dallas on April 11.

The Rockets, champions of the US Interregional Soccer League (USISL), never lost by more than one goal last season. And English coach Phil Jones promises an attacking exhibition as his side primed for an expected third-round meeting with Tauro FC of Panama.

"In all my years and experiences a 4-0 lead when you leave the country could go away quickly,'' Jones said. "It is not exactly comfortable and we will be playing like we are four goals down.'' But for all Jones' diplomacy there are few who will back the local team's chances, especially since they scored four goals in a game only once last season -- a shocking FA Cup win over Somerset Trojans.

The first leg was decided within the first 15 minutes as Hamilton quickly found themselves down three goals. "We wanted to get players forward,'' Jones added. "I was prepared to gamble to get people forward.

"It was a system I used for years since I was at Crystal Palace. We got the early goal that mattered and before they realised what hit them we scored again; and after 14 minutes we were three up when one of their lads put through his own goal.'' Dallas have included Major Soccer League defender Eddie Radwanski of the Tacoma Stars and Thomas Woolley, suspended from the second leg game against Belizians Cemcol-Crown, will return to play at full-back.

The Rockets' most seasoned player is English forward Kenny Latham, who was once an apprentice at Liverpool.

Latham has had stints at Scottish League Hamilton Academdicals and Belenenses of Portugal before spending three years in New Zealand and Australia, and then sticking to the US after what was intended to be just a visit.

"He was a major capture for us,'' said Jones, who is two-time USISL Coach of the Year. "We also have three or four players to come into the team that are really good, some of whom are ex-internationals.'' Hamilton's most significant squad change will be Derek Scott for Myron Piper who has not recovered from a hairline fracture.

Admission to the match is $5 and $1 for children under 16.
