Jason thwarts Wolves

Three miraculous saves by goalkeeper Jason Smith during the final stages of this Premier Division match at Devonshire Rec. denied Wolves the maximum points they deserved.

It was during this late purple patch when Wolves showed supreme confidence and pushed powerfully forward for the winner after Devarr Boyles snatched the Town equaliser to a first-half goal from Nakia Smith.

But goalkeeper Smith did not flinch, refusing to allow the inspired Wolves attack a winner as precious time ticked away in a match that Wolves had earlier managed to hold slight territorial advantage.

Smith's late heroics started after 78 minutes when a blast from Nakia Smith deflected off a defender and headed towards goal only to see the goalkeeper stretch to the limit to sensationally palm the ball over for a corner much to the dismay of the large crowd.

After 87 minutes the goalkeeper again showed his great agility by advancing off his line to fall at the feet and block a fierce shot from substitute Nathan Webb.

And deep into injury time Smith was again called on to help Town make a miraculous escape, this time falling to smother a rocket by Nakia Smith.

Based on these chances Wolves should have won, but there was no denying that they held sufficient play earlier to pull off a triumph in this league opener.

With skipper Anthony Thomas a driving force in midfield during the entire game, Wolves always dominated in the middle.

In sharp contrast, Town were unsettled in the middle, unable to establish any real rhythm and relied too often on the speed of front men Carlos Smith and Darron Simons to do damage.

Mark Ray and Jared Peniston each put a shot wide of goal during the first 25 minutes for Wolves and Town didn't come up with any efforts until Carlos Smith fired in a 35-yard shot which goalkeeper Corby Durrant tipped over the bar.

Sean Smith then paid heavily for a blunder three minutes later when his poor clearance went directly to the grateful Nakia Smith who this time masterfully chipped the ball home over goalkeeper Smith from 15 yards to put Wolves a goal ahead.

After 65 minutes Town won a free kick outside of the penalty area and substitute Paul Cann, who had wisely been brought on for Raymond Beach after 52 minutes, watched as his kick was glanced home off the head of Boyles to level the scores.

Playing with more ambition Wolves pushed forward and pinned down their opponents for long spells but were denied the clincher by the heroics of goalkeeper Smith.
