Last minute penalty sends Wolves wild
Hotels 1 Wolves 2 Lanky striker Khari Sharrieff kept his cool to fire home an injury time penalty and send Wolves into their first-ever FA Cup final in this all-Second Division clash at Bernard Park yesterday.
It was a hotly disputed decision as Sharrieff went sprawling inside the box from a challenge as he tried to race past three defenders in the crowded area.
Amidst the Hotels protests, Dennis Robinson was sent off for swearing at referee Lyndon Raynor as he voiced his displeasure with the decision.
Teenager Joey Rego, who had a 69th minute penalty saved which would have given Wolves the lead, was probably happy to be passed up for the duties the second time as Sharrieff planted the spot kick into the bottom corner.
It was an eventful match for Wolves as they trailed in the first half to a Wayne Augustus goal and then turned the game around with an improved performance after the restart.
"This was from digging deep in spirit,'' said two-goal hero Sharrieff, who missed the quarter-final replay win over Vasco through injury.
This time he made his mark in a big way. "I didn't think we would lose, I thought we would end up with a draw,'' he said. "I never thought for one minute we would lose.'' As they did in the match against Vasco, Wolves had to come from behind to clinch victory after Hotels took the lead in first half injury time when full back Wayne Augustus scored with a low left-footed shot from inside the box.
"That's what comes with experience, they knew what to do,'' said Sharrieff.
"Our main plan was for everybody to concentrate on passing the ball around and make their big man in defence, my brother (Diallo), move around.'' Hotels' lead should have been even bigger by the end of the half after they missed some good chances.
Wolves had an injury scare when John Barry Nusum went off to have his left foot strapped. And when he returned there was a substitution with fourth official Lyndon Raynor taking over from referee Gary Cooke who limped to the sidelines in the 20th minute.
Though Hotels had the better of the first half chances, Wolves looked threatening whenever Sharrieff was fed the ball.
Rego was booked for pulling back Robinson in the 25th minute and a few minutes later Robinson wasted an excellent chance to break the deadlock. A high ball from the right saw 'keeper Burgess stretch and get his fingertips to the ball.
The youngster only succeeded in pulling the ball down into the path of Robinson who followed up to sidefoot over the top with Burgess still recovering.
Wolves got things going in the second half and were quickly applying the pressure as they worked hard for the equaliser.
Wayne Campbell was booked for kicking the ball away after being blown down for a handball offence and then Wolves made two quick substitutions which gave them a boost.
Michael Dill came on for Clevon Hill and a minute later, to the delight of the Wolves fans, the veteran defender Kirk (Dasher) Douglas was brought in to stabilise the defence as Nusum was pushed into a more attacking role.
Sharrieff equalised in the 58th minute when his left-foot shot from the right side of the penalty box found the far top corner.
Wolves were now enjoying a good spell and in the 69th minute they should have taken the lead from the penalty spot when Nusum was brought down by Walter Crockwell as he raced through on the left. Rego's spot kick wasn't struck firmly and Stefan Dupres in the Hotels goal made a good save to his left.
Before the kick was taken referee Raynor had to seek the assistance of officials as Wolves fans came onto the pitch behind the goal.
Rego made amends for the penalty miss by heading off the line from a corner on the left by Robinson in the 79th minute and then five minutes from the end Sharrieff went close again when he took a pass on his chest, turned inside the box and had a shot deflected for a corner.
The closing minutes were full of drama as Robinson had his name taken for a foul on Sharrieff. From Rego's free kick into the box, the ball was allowed to bounce before Sharrieff shot over the bar.
Moments later he drove a low shot wide of the near post after Nathan Webb headed the ball down. Sharrieff, himself, was booked in the 90th minute for an infringement but the busy striker had the last laugh, scoring the penalty a minute-and-a-half into injury time to send Hotels crashing to their first defeat of the season.

Wolves 2 BAA 1 A goal down and a man short, Wolves turned this Crystal Palace semi-final tie around with two goals in five minutes early in the second half at Bernard Park.
BAA led at the half on a goal from Irvyn Fletcher in the 21st minute. But Wolves, playing the match with 10 men because a couple of players were with the senior team, were not deterred as BAA were put under pressure early in the second half.
Damon Mallory scored from the penalty spot six minutes into the half when BAA goalkeeper Paul Fox was blown down for shoving a Wolves player after a corner on the left.
Five minutes later Mallory scored again as BAA were undone by another corner on the left. This time Mallory scored directly from the inswinging kick, beating the 'keeper at the near post.
BAA went close to equalising on a couple of occasions as Helio Canto shot wide and then Jabari Furbert put his effort into the side-netting following a quick break by Kevin Mutch down the flank.
Then BAA's Neil Almeida put a rebound over the bar from close range.
Wolves will meet champions North Village in the final on April 13.
