Lightbourns win Seagull race

Seagull Race finally got underway last weekend, although on a restricted course around the islands of the Great Sound. Overall victory went to Brian Lightbourn and Vicki Lightbourn in No Guano with the fastest time of three hours and 16 minutes. First across the line were Eddie Wicks and Peter Rego in Manga Head in six hours, 12 minutes.

The course involved three laps of an eight mile loop from the Eye of the Needle (Long Island and Hawkins Island cut), around White's, Five Star and Pearl Islands to starboard and back.

A total of 42 boats took part, and two in the dinghy class -- Mohawk and It Ain't Easy -- decided to throw caution to the wind and set out on the traditional round the island course, racing down South Shore and returning via Castle Roads. The race in the Sound saw the first ever sinking, with Tim Mahoney and Randy Mello in Tim Ward's Skuttle flipping over.
