Maltby gets Bluebirds off the mark

Sarah Maltby bagged two goals as Bluebirds registered their first win of the season in the ladies hockey A League.

Maltby opened the scoring just before half-time and made it 2-0 in the second when she fired home from a short corner penalty.

Orioles were having a tough time finding a way past goalkeeper Carla Pedro, but finally managed to pull one back through Georgina Adlam.

Deborah Sagus sealed victory for the Bluebirds with her first A-team goal, when she reacted quickest to turn a rebounded shot into the net.

Canaries A 2 Cardinals A 0 Canaries maintained their 100 percent record in the top flight with their fifth successive victory.

Lisa DeSilva lashed home a fine shot after Emma Simmons' initial strike had been blocked to give Canaries a 1-0 half-time lead.

In the second half, Cardinals had two penalty flicks saved by Canaries goalkeeper Tami Ray as both sides missed a string of chances.

Canaries finally made sure of the points with a cleverly constructed second goal. Rhonda Rawlins stopped the ball at the top of the circle from a short corner, then pushed it through the Cardinal defensive line into the path of the advancing Stacey DeShields, who smacked it into the net.

Cardinals goalkeeper Vicki Johnston had an outstanding match, as did her team-mate Brenda Smith, who also saved the Reds' bacon several times, in particular when she emerged from nowhere to prevent Canaries scoring into an empty net.

Swifts A 1 Swallows A 1 Swallows dominated the first half as Swifts seemed slow to wake up. Only good defending by Swifts' Sarah Cooper, Cathie Hay and goalkeeper Jennah Robinson kept Swallows at bay.

Just before the interval, Swallows finally managed to break through, taking the lead from a penalty corner.

Swifts were a transformed side in the second period and after numerous attacks, they were rewarded with a Kim Frith equaliser.

Bluebirds B 1 Orioles B 0 Denise O'Donoghue scored the decisive goal to give Bluebirds their second B League win of the season.

O'Donoghue struck 13 minutes into the second half after a great build-up involving forwards Ingrid McKenna and Ellen Charnley.

Cardinals B 1 Canaries B 0 Cardinals ended the first round of B League matches undefeated, as they handed Canaries their second defeat of the campaign.

Cardinals defended so well that Canaries found it hard to get into shooting positions.

The winning goal came when Alison Dyer crossed from the right and a combination of Jami McKenna and Michelle Clark deflected the ball into goal.

Swallows B 2 Swifts B 0 Swifts started off brightly when Emily Leitch went close in the opening minutes, but Swallows went on to dominate the rest of the first half. Good work in midfield by Swifts' Anna Terceira, Stephanie Adderley and Sophie and Megan Jones couldn't prevent Swallows retaining the upper hand.

Melanie Burns put Swallows ahead after 20 minutes, with Nicola Wilkinson providing the assist. Katie Shaw went close to equalising for Swifts two minutes before half-time, but she was denied by diving Swallows goalkeeper Cath Griffiths.

Swallows sealed the points with a second goal from Sarah Davies from a penalty corner four minutes from the end.
