Overseas swimmers take on Bermuda

The Harbour Open Championship features more than 130 swimmers from the four Island clubs as well as 34 others from overseas clubs: North York and Waterloo from Ontario, Fairfield of Maryland and Brevard from Florida.

Heats in the 69 events were last night; finals will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m.

and at 5.30 p.m.

To complete the weekend, a relay meet between Bermuda snd the visitors goes Monday, starting at 5.30 p.m. Bermuda have beaten the visitors the past five years at the championships, which are hosted by Harbour Amateur Swim Club.

Several other events are held in conjunction with the meet, including the annual Trunk Island Swim, hosted by Triangles Swim Club. This is an open water swim from Trunk Island in Harrington Sound to the Palmetto Hotel on Sunday, starting at 2p.m. The event usually draws between 250-300 participants, including many of the top age group swimmers, triathletes and masters swimmers. The swim is 1,325 metres from start to finish with swimmers taken to the starting line at Trunk Island by boat after checking in and marking at the Palmetto Hotel. Registration and marking of swimmers begins at 12 noon and the first boat leaves for Trunk Island at 1.15 p.m. The last boat leaves at 1.40p.m.

The top swimmers are expected to complete the course in 16-18 minutes.
