Pearman defeats Bean for match play crown

defeated Cornell Bean during the final of the Bermuda PGA Lobster Pot Match Play Championship yesterday at Port Royal.

Lightning, nor heavy rain could halt the charge of Pearman, the defending champion, who won eight and six at the 30th hole -- the final was contested over 36 holes.

Unlike last year, when Pearman needed 33 holes to put an end to a three year reign by Bean, the Ocean View Golf Club professional surged ahead almost from the outset and never looked back.

After losing the first hole, Pearman won the second before halving the third, but then proceeded to reel off four in a row and led by that same amount after the first 18.

Further success at 19, 20 and 21 gave him a commanding seven hole lead and though Bean got to within five, while taking 22 and 23, another Pearman spurt at 25 and 26 removed any doubts about which pocket would carry home the $600 winner's cheque.

"It's a good feeling to win for the second year in a row,'' said Pearman, who improved steadily throughout the week. "I got a good start and was able to keep it going.

"The key was that I kept my tee shots in the fairway and everything worked out from there.

"It's a pretty good start (to the season). I've won every tournament in Bermuda and the only thing left to do is...win them again.'' Bean, meanwhile, said he was surprised to have even reached the final as he had not practiced much prior to the tournament.

He laid some blame on the fact that he was using a new set of clubs, which he had difficulty holding onto, but emphasised that it was more a case of Pearman being just too good on the day.

"Dwayne played well. His short game was good. I can't take anything away,'' said Bean, who picked up a prize of over $400. "I really didn't play well all week. I wasn't going to even enter because I hadn't been playing that much.''
