Ninth after two races, the defending International One Design champion raced to a fifth-place finish in race three, boosting him to seventh overall.
Simmons was eighth and seventh in the first two races while other competitors have seen sporadic results, including a seventh for first-place John Burnham and a tenth for second-place Urban Ristorp.
Very light winds have caused the postponement of several races but a change in conditions is expected to make for an interesting last five races today and tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Bermuda's Craig Davis had his best performance of the championships, sailing to an eighth-place finish after posting a 13th and 14th in the first two races.
