Red Devils put colts to the whip

The musical chairs game at the head of the First Division continued yesterday as North Village hammered former leaders Devonshire Colts 4-0 at Frog Lane, dropping them from first to third place overall.

Two goals from Kevin Jennings and one apiece by Philip Clarke and Elliott Jennings gave Village a richly deserved victory and served to ruin the day for the home side.

Colts now find themselves locked on 19 points along with three others and trail new leaders Somerset by one point, meanwhile, Village are still within striking distance, two points further back.

Ceremonies commenced on a sombre note with both sides wearing black arm bands and observing a moment of silence in memory of departed comrade Jerome (J.B.) Belboda, tragically killed in an automobile accident early yesterday morning.

However, Colts never quite awakened from that stony silence and were duly punished by a Village side bent on making one final push for league honours.

Coming in for particularly harsh treatment was Colts' full-back Keenan Burchall, whom Elliott Jennings often exposed, leaving the youngster scrambling in his wake when he made inroads along the flanks.

The first chance for Village came with the match barely five minutes old as right-back Kevin Grant surged down the right side and crossed to an unmarked Kevin Jennings, who muffed his chance to poke the ball home. Then Clarke fumbled the rebound out of play.

Although both would eventually score, this would mark the beginning of a string of misses by the pair, who constantly found themselves in position to shoot but all too often lacked the final execution.

Elliott Jennings was the supplier of most of these opportunities through tireless work in his roving role up front.

He finally took matters into his own hands when he booted the Red Devils into the lead a minute prior to half-time. A header by Clarke from a Rahji Edness corner was redirected by a sliding Jennings, sending the ball high into the roof of the net past the flailing arms of goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson.

Village had controlled much of the half, limiting their opponents to sporadic counter-attacks that never really bothered an efficient defence that was anchored in the middle by Shawn Smith and Michael Hansey, and full-backs Grant and Wayne Augustus.

The wait for goals was a lot shorter in the second half as Village came out storming.

Kimandi Binns saw his 53rd-minute header from 16 yards saved off the line by Burchall, but there was nothing anyone could do to keep Kevin Jennings from scoring moments later.

A move started on the left by Augustus, who was superb throughout, saw him pass to Elliott Jennings who in turn fed Kevin Jennings midway into the Colts half of the field. The latter proceeded to cut in and unload an angled blast that left Hendrickson unable to react as the ball rocketed into the back of the net.

Further embarrassment was heaped on the `keeper when Jennings again found room to fire. However, he managed a feeble effort that Hendrickson allowed to slip through his legs and trickle into goal for a 3-0 scoreline.

The final nail was hammered home when Clarke picked up a ball at midfield and easily outpaced Lorenzo Symonds before slotting the ball past a helpless Hendrickson.
