Round-the-world sailor begins plans for a second attempt

A solo yachtswoman whose first attempt to sail round the world foundered on the rocks of Bermuda is determined to try again.

Miss Anita Page, 41, of Florida, is refusing to let the nightmare experience in October discourage her belief that she can complete such a voyage.

She was back in Bermuda this week to visit Mr. Royle Kemp, who has helped to salvage parts of her yacht Sparrow , which still lies off Sonesta Beach.

Miss Page ran aground while she was asleep, after a tough battle to keep control of the 35-foot yacht in a ferocious storm. She managed to swim ashore suffering only a broken rib during the drama.

Mr. Kemp and friends have salvaged many items which have since washed ashore.

But he has also been helped by diving teams.

And Miss Page said that the items which have been saved will help her enormously to offset the cost of refitting another yacht for her next attempt.

"I came back to look through the things that Mr. Kemp has pulled up and they will obviously come in handy when I have another yacht,'' she said.

"I am also going to do a little diving myself when the weather improves. I want to look for my log book. It would be great if I can find it.

"There is no question that I am very grateful to Mr. Kemp for everything that he has done.'' Mr. Kemp was able to rescue much of the yacht's contents and says all that is really left underwater is the yacht's 8,000 pound lead keel.

Miss Page has recovered from her broken rib and is now seeking sponsorship for her next globe-circling adventure. She said: "My rib is pretty well healed and I am running and swimming again.

"As soon as I can get back on my feet again and get a boat I will make an attempt. This year would be nice but realistically it should be the fall of 1994.'' In late 1994 a major round-the-world boat race begins from South Carolina and Miss Page believes entering will give her a better chance of obtaining financial support.

Refusing to be discouraged by the previous disaster, she said: "It has been a sobering experience. Several world class sailors were killed last summer.

"It was a peculiar year, with a lot of vicious storms and a lot of my problems were down to the fact that it was just a bad year.

"I really need a 40-foot yacht and I hope the weather will be better. I will give it my best shot.'' TEAMWORK -- Solo sailor Miss Anita Page, with the help of Mr. Royle Kemp, is attempting to salvage what remains of her yacht Sparrow which broke up on rocks off Sonesta Beach last year.
