Shrubb cashes in with final victory
$500 after emerging as part of the winning team in the third BIAS Adult-Child Squash Tournament over the weekend.
The mutual fund investment, donated by sponsors BIAS, will be used towards Shrubb's post-secondary education.
Shrubb and partner Mel Caines beat Douglas Olson and Kirby Smith 4-0 in the final with the youngster playing a significant role in that victory, continuing his outstanding form by dominating Olson from start to finish to win 15-5, 15-10, 15-12.
Olson, however, showed great temperament in never giving up, but Shrubb's superior skill won out in the end. Caines then took to the court to emulate his younger partner's effort.
Smith was given little chance in the game as Caines lifted his level of play to a tournament high. His error-free squash and intelligent shot selection gave him victory 15-11 for an unbeatable 4-0 team lead and the overall title.
The tournament field was reduced to four teams from the original 44 for the weekend which saw two semi-finals. And the crowd on hand were treated to some excellent squash.
Favourites Shrubb and Caines were the first to clinch a place in the final, beating father and son Tim and Graham Counsell 4-2.
Shrubb started strongly, beating Graham 15-12, 11-15, 15-3. Both boys are members of the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association Performance squad.
However, Shrubb's recent experience representing Bermuda at the Junior Caribbean Championships and the US Junior Olympics seemed to give him the edge. While his opponent fought back to win the second game and tie the match at 1-1, Shrubb dominates the final game to win 15-3.
With his team down 2-1, Tim Counsell evened the score by taking the first game of his match against Caines, 15-14. Caines fought back valiantly to save eight game points but didn't have enough left to win the final point.
With the match tied at 2-2, the second game of the second match was vital as Counsell again jumped away to a handy lead. However, this time Caines was equal to the task, saving six game points and taking the game 15-14.
In the final game it became obvious Counsell had run out of gas. Caines dominated play and took the game 15-6 for an overall 4-2 win.
The other semi-final was another exciting match which went right down to the wire with Olson and Smith, a last minute inclusion to the final 16, coming away 4-3 winners over Simon and Alan Bergl.
Simon started the Bergls off with a 15-12, 13-15, 15-9 win over Olson. Both players had a similiar handicap and a tough encounter was expected, with Simon finishing strongly to take the match.
The Bergls also started strongly in the next match with Alan winning his first game against Smith 15-13 to give his team a 3-1 lead and move them one game away from victory.
The youthful Smith lifted his game to another level in the second and third games to win 15-9, 15-11 and tie the score at 3-3. The two junior members of the teams, Simon and Douglas, contested the ensuing tie-breaker, with Douglas having a slight handicap advantage.
Simon quickly cut back the deficit to lead 5-4 before Douglas turned it around with some outstanding points to win 15-13 and clinch a 4-3 victory.
