Smith was battling for honours among an elite fleet that included 91 boats.

Bermudians David Frith and Shannon Simmons were further down the fleet -- Frith 31st and Simmons 47th with three races left.

America's David Loring was in first place followed by Ed Cordeiro of Venezuela, John Bilboa also of Venezuela, Paul Johnpatten of United States, Smith, and Donnie Martinborough of the United States.

The event suffered an early tragedy when 46-year-old American sailor Tommy Barnes collapsed with a heart attack and was drowned.
