Somerset go crazy against poor BAA
Somerset rolled over BAA with masterful ease in this one-sided Crystal Palace Youth Cup quarter-final tussle.
The scoreline suggests a rout -- and it certainly was, with Somerset's striker Johnny Best leading the way with four goals.
But, in truth, the home team could have at least doubled their tally had they taken all their chances.
In the first half, they had to content themselves with six goals.
The scorers were Best, who struck twice, Marco Perinchief, Devon Dent, Harry Hunt, and Lloyd Petekin.
After the interval, Somerset, the older and physically tougher team, appeared to hold back.
Chance after chance went begging, and, with BAA's goalkeeper pulling off some impressive saves, it seemed the goal glut had dried up.
But after a barren initial spell, the floodgates opened, with Best picking up another couple of goals, and Hunt adding his name a second time to the scoresheet.
Rodre Wilson and Keion Simmons also found the mark to complete the rout.
St. David's 0, Dev. Colts 3 Two goals by Damon Ming and another by Julian Francis gave Devonshire Colts a comfortable win in this quarter-final tie at St. David's as St. David's goalkeeper Gregory Minors kept them in the game with some outstanding first-half saves.
As a result of Minors' performance Colts only led by Ming's 29th-minute opener after racing onto a clearance and lobbing over the 'keeper. Ming added a second goal two minutes into the second half before Francis put the game out of St. David's reach in the 56th minute with a flick following a cross after the defence had again been penetrated.
Francis went close to making it four-nil three minutes from the end but his low shot from the edge of the penalty area was saved by the diving Minors.
Dandy Town 4, Wolves 1 Dandy Town surged into the semifinals as they crushed an overmatched Wolves outfit 4-1 in the curtain-raiser at Bernard Park yesterday.
The onslaught for Town started with Quincy Jones netting in the 20th minute and continued six minutes later when Marlon Symonds put them two goals up.
Wolves would come back though, reducing the margin to one when Reo Peniston converted, but Dandy Town made it 3-1 heading into the half-time interval as Symonds notched his second on the half-hour.
More of the same occurred in the second half with Town controlling much of the action. Their three-pronged attack of Jones, Alan Hypolite, and Symonds were a constant thorn, forcing Wolves to defend for long periods.
Meanwhile, Town goalkeeper Joe Valaduo was largely inactive as Wolves were unable to create much penetration, even with the skillful duo of Lashun and Michael Dill leading the way up front.
Hypolite put the result beyond doubt when he pounced on a failed clearance by the Wolves defence to drive home a low shot from inside the penalty area.
North Village 1, PHC 1 (after extra time) First-half goals by Kiewon Dill of North Village and Blenn Bean of PHC was the only scoring either team could manage in this interesting quarter-final at Southampton Oval.
But Village came close to settling it near the end of the second period of extra time when a blast by Kevin Phillips from the edge of the area was sensationally tipped over by Antiba Simons in the PHC goal.
The game, which was evenly contested throughout with each team staging counter-attacks after some promising raids, saw Village take a 1-0 lead through a goal by Dill after 31 minutes.
However, Bean grabbed the equaliser for PHC seven minutes later to make the score even at the half.
The trend of play continued in the second half with PHC taking the initiative early only to see Village eventually settle down and dominate during the closing stages.
Bean and Dill each had chances for their respective teams when play restarted, Bean slamming a shot at goalkeeper Anthony Swan from 15 yards and Dill missing a sitter shortly afterward when he lobbed the ball over the bar with the goalkeeper well off his line.
The replay date will be announced by the BFA this week.
DEFENCE -- PHC's MacLee Smith shuts the door on North Village's Jah Simmons in yesterday's Crystal Palace Youth Cup quarter-final at Southampton. The match was drawn 1-1 after extra time.
