St. George's double up on Colts
Substitute Del Tyrell was the toast of St. George's yesterday when he rocked Devonshire Colts with a goal after 81 minutes to give the home side both points in this First Division clash at Wellington Oval.
Brought on as a substitute for striker Sinclair M. Smith after 73 minutes Tyrell delivered the brutal blow when he chased after a long kick by goalkeeper Troy Hall and headed the ball past the advancing Colts goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson.
The incident tore the heart out of the visiting team because it occurred when St. George's Colts had been reduced to 10 men after having midfielder Jan Cieters sent off by referee John Bento after 52 minutes when he fouled Yul Wade.
St. George's completed a league double over Devonshire Colts who went into the day at the head of the tables and are now second to Somerset Trojans who edged North Village 1-0.
The game had few stimulating moments with Devonshire Colts unable to show much of the form that saw them score a crushing 5-1 win over Hotels in an FA Cup quarter-final replay on Thursday night. St. George's were less than spectacular themselves.
The first half saw some decent approach work with both attacks building up neatly but petering out as they reached the penalty area.
St. George's though had the better of the half, creating a good chance after 20 minutes but Sinclair Smith was wide with a shot from 15 yards from a fine cross by Steven Denbrook. They followed this up with Clay Smith slamming a shot into the side netting five minutes later.
However, Devonshire Colts came into the game more and more with Mark Ray, Leonard Hypolite and Yul Wade prominent in midfield but their distributions were either wasted by an inept front line or cleared by a steady defence marshalled by skipper and centre-half Earl Basden.
Harrison Trott put an effort wide for Devonshire Colts after 30 minutes and Hall pushed away a troublesome, curling corner by skipper Craig Smith just before the half.
The second half started with Clay Smith hammering a cross by Marlon Outerbridge right at goalkeeper Hendrickson from 12 yards and following this up with a free kick from 22 yards that went just wide of the post.
However, once Cieters got his marching orders after 52 minutes St. George's were forced to play with a more cautious approach and consequently their opponents were able to come into the game with more momentum.
Even still the home team were not overawed by having the odds stacked against them and they only became more encouraged to fight with more determination by playing short.
Devonshire Colts surprisingly became more unsettled and impatient when they attacked and the St. George's defence was able to deal with anything they had to offer.
It was St. George's who first came close to scoring after the departure of Cieters when substitute Delbert Minors watched in agony as his fierce drive from the edge of the area was pushed around the post for a corner by Hendrickson.
The visiting team continued to push forward with their advantage and after 72 minutes should have opened the scoring but substitute Keishon Smith miskicked a cross from Quincey Aberdeen when he was just a few yards away from goal -- this was so far the miss of the game.
Afterwards, Hall dove full length to push Craig Smith's drive from an angle on the left for a corner and then the goalkeeper snatched a well-taken shot from Chris Wright when he was just outside of the box.
It was just after this attack that Hall made his long kick that saw Hendrickson hesistate just a little to enable Tyrell to head the ball home to the delight of his team-mates.
The home team came close to making it 2-0 two minutes from time when a cross by Minors was smashed against the post by Gregory Foggo and cleared.
