St.George's improve but the misery continues . . .

When you have been struggling as badly as St.George's have this season, you measure success in small pieces.

Like scoring a goal.

But while they may have reached one milestone last night they failed in the most important one -- winning.

Arch rivals St. David's extended St.George's' losing streak to five games with their victory in this Friendship Trophy tie at Somerset.

The First Division newcomers were full value for their victory but received a stern test from a team that hadn't previously come within four goals of winning this season.

It appeared that St. George's were in for another long night when Earlwin Wolffe and Otis Minors put St. David's ahead 2-0 by the 16th minute.

To make matters worse for St.George's they were without regular goalkeeper Rodney Burchall who was injured in Tuesday night's loss to PHC.

Wolffe took advantage of back-up 'keeper Delroy Smith's rustiness just 12 minutes into the game when his long, low shot skipped under the 'keeper's hands.

Just four minutes later Minors scored from a penalty awarded after referee Gary Cooke ruled that Shea Pitcher had been fouled while attempting to head in a corner.

Neil Paynter made 1996 history for St.George's with a fluke goal in the 21st minute, his high cross eluding the outstretched arms of St.David's keeper Kuhn Evans and landing in the far corner.

The second half was mostly a midfield battle, but St.David's took over during the final 15 minutes, coming within inches of goals from efforts by Wolffe and Greg Foggo.

Keith Jennings finallly added insurance for St.David's five minutes from the end, rocketing a 20-yard blast into the top corner.
