BASKETBALL BAS Young Guns continue to shoot down opposition, with Peoples Pharmacy their latest victims in Bermuda Basketball Summer League action Wednesday evening.
After losing their opening three matches Guns (5-3) -- competing in the Eastern Division -- have sizzled during a five game winning streak which has moved them into third place, two games behind leaders Tucker's Tees (6-0).
Peoples (3-4) could do little to stall the march, going down 59-36.
Ijumo Hayward led a balanced Guns' attack with 13 while D.Morgan added 11.
This served to offset 16 registered by Peoples' L.Matthews and T.Pitcher's 13.
In the west, Metro (6-1) were successful against Bratt Pack, prevailing 45-38 as H.Davidson and R.Fox contributed 16 and 12 respectively. C.Knight and J.Lauder both had 10 points for the losers, who fell to 3-5 on the year.
A closer affair saw Bank of Bermuda (2-6) add to Warwick Academy's (0-7) misery, as they edged them 44-41.
GOLF GLF The BII Young Members Committee tournament at St. George's Golf Club at the weekend saw Griffiths and Wanklyn finish in first place with Argus (III) second and XL Insurance third.
Longest drive honours went to Anne Marie Gagnon and Kirk Kitson while closest to the pin were Pamela Wimbush and Ken McDonald on number three and Anne Marie Gagnon and Douglas Morris on number 15. Steven Western had a hole in one on the fifth hole.
SOFTBALL SOF Commercial Softball league action on Wednesday saw P.M. blast Kempe/Whittle 23-18 behind Tony Gogax who went 4-for-5 and Al Dunkel and John Ray who each had three hits.
Bud Lite beat IRM 15-8 with Gerry McCormick going 4-for-4 with a homer, triple, double and single and four RBIs.
Hornets beat Warwick 6-1 with Tony Mouchette going 2-for-3.
SWIMMING SW Fourteen-year-old Jeremy Hammond broke an age group record at the Harbour Club Championships at the BASA Pool on Saturday.
He swam 34.36 seconds in the 50 metre breaststroke to improve on a record that had stood since 1984.
Two of the day's closely-contested events ended in dead heats. Trevor Hedges and Craig Ferguson both finished in 37.65 in the 13-14 50 metres butterfly, while Kris Hedges and Matthew Hammond had identical times of 43.93 seconds in the 11-12 50 metres breaststroke.
Age group winners were as follows: (8 and under: Keira Aitken, BenDyer; (9-10:) Elisha Miller, Devananda Smith; (11-12:) Laura Dickinson, Trevor Nelson; (13-14:) Lauren Perinchief, Stephen Fahy; (15 and over:) Tiffany Gosling, Craig Roberts.
Today sees the start of the Summer National Age Group Championships hosted by the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association.
The meet continues until Sunday.
TARGET SHOOTING SHO Coral Reefs Rifle and Pistol Club shot two rounds of their weekly competition at the Prospect range on Wednesday before taking a week off for the Cup Match Holiday.
Carl Reid was the winner of one round with a score of 192, closely followed by Nelson Simons on 191.
The other round went to Anthony Rabain with 191, jointly followed by Simons and Eugene Robinson on 189.
Simons is the overall leader of the competition, with Reid in second place.
