Streaker is back today
join the squad for Sunday's match against El Salvador.
It is later than the coaching staff would have preferred, especially with Carlyle Crockwell working out alone because of the injury to Ty Williams and the absence of Andre Hendrickson (off the Island) and overseas student Tim Figuerido.
But the good news is Adams has been very active in the last couple of months, playing in 12 of his school's 13 games so far this season and conceding just five goals in helping them to a 9-2-2 record.
"I've been playing well, from being in England (trials at Crewe) in August and then coming to school,'' said Adams who is a Physical Education major at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.
He was successful in the trials with Third Division Crewe but decided to accept a soccer scholarship in the US instead of the six-month contract Crewe were offering.
"I've really kept up with my training and I've had some fine games,'' Adams said. "I saved a penalty the other day. Some of the games have gone into overtime, so I'm definitely fit.'' Adams, still only 19, has established himself in the last couple of years and if the country is to enjoy any further World Cup glory he will need to retain his form from the previous qualifying matches.
"The World Cup at this stage is very important to me and the coach has said, `Let's not worry about that, do the job for your country','' Adams explained.
He helped his school win the Carolina Conference last week, which involved six games in the region and next year the school is planning to join the NCAA Division II. They presently compete in the NAIA.
A mid-term break this weekend, after a final exam yesterday morning, has enabled Adams to stay with the Bermuda team until next Wednesday before returning to school for an important match next Thursday against highly-ranked Catawba, also of North Carolina. The following day he will be back home for Bermuda's second group match with Jamaica at the National Stadium.
The school has two more important matches on November 4 and 7 before the season winds up towards the end of November.
For the away matches next month Adams anticipates leaving school to join the Bermuda team at their training base in Florida on Thursdays or Fridays and return to his books on the Monday.
DWAYNE ADAMS.
