Sub Jennings fires Village into final

North Village 2 PHC 1 A late winner by substitute Kevin Jennings fired champions North Village into another FA Cup final in this semi-final replay at Wellington Oval yesterday.

With time running out and extra-time looming, Jennings clinched victory with the goal of the match.

Latching on to a long ball received from just inside the Village half, the speedy forward raced down the left flank and smartly avoided a challenge by a defender before advancing and smartly placing a curling right-footed shot into the far right corner when 'keeper Carlyle Crockwell seemingly had all angles covered. The goal re-established Village's one-goal lead that had been wiped out by PHC's player-coach and substitute Sammy Swan after 70 minutes.

Village had taken a first-half lead with a goal by Jamaul Boyles after 32 minutes. Matchwinner Jennings had been brought onto the field by coach Scott Morton after 66 minutes for Boyles.

However, such was the ineptness of Village's attack that either one of the front line players, Dwight Warren, Tafari Outerbridge or Vernon Tankard might have been replaced.

Warren, who has long been recognised for his deadly finishing, was often seen hesitating when near the penalty box and Outerbridge and Tankard also lacked finishing skills when within range. Warren was later replaced by Tarik Jennings after 73 minutes.

"Kevin has this intensity a lot of players don't naturally possess within themselves, he's got a winning spirit and attitude and it was a great goal on his part,'' said the coach.

"He actually was supposed to start but some arrangements got delayed and we were forced to bring him on as a substitute, but everything worked out well for us in the end.'' While Village held territorial advantage for the most part, it proved a game of few chances.

"The first half we played well, moving the ball around the pitch and doing the things necessary to destruct PHC's long ball rhythm and I think it worked effectively, we got a goal,'' added Morton.

"But in the second half our players settled down too much and obviously PHC had to come at us hard to win and they did that and we were unable to make progress at a time when we just didn't have the intensity.

"Our defence got a bit relaxed because of the amount of possession that we had and (Raynel) Lightbourne was causing a few problems. We must remember that we have to remain intense throughout.'' Lightbourne got into his menacing act early on and should have put PHC ahead after just seven minutes.

Left full back Jevon Sealey found Lightbourne with a good pass, goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson advanced and dived in an attempt to get the ball off the forward's feet but Lightbourne evaded this challenge and sent his 15-yard blast at goal only to watch as centre-back Kentoine Jennings was in position to clear it off the goal line.

But Village settled down and left full back Kimandi Binns created their first chance when he headed a Warren corner that forced Crockwell into a good save.

Village followed up with some good approach work but Warren and Keith Jennings both put chances wide after 16 and 21 minutes.

Lightbourne got through again after a defensive lapse on 28 minutes but Hendrickson blocked his drive from 15 yards and the rebound saw Duval Wilson put his shot wide from 16 yards.

Village finally got the go-ahead goal after 32 minutes when a Warren corner resulted in a scramble and Boyles was there to whip a shot home from close range. The Red Devils were unlucky not to take a 2-0 lead after 47 minutes when Boyles thundered a rocket onto the crossbar. Then Keith Jennings followed up by driving his angled shot right at goalkeeper Crockwell from 15 yards.

PHC's decision to bring on player-coach Swan for Toric Russell when the half re-started brought dividends after 70 minutes when the veteran fired home during a goalmouth scramble following a right wing corner.

Five minutes later hard-working midfielder Chris Furbert drilled his 16-yard shot just over the top.

With both teams looking tired, Village dug deep and the speedy Kevin Jennings showed his team-mates how to finish with a powerful run and accurate shot.
