Sub Samuels strikes gold

Dev. Colts 1 Dandy Town 0 Defensive midfielder Jahmah Samuels was the unlikely hero for Devonshire Colts yesterday as they clinched their second end-of-season trophy with victory in the FA Cup final at the National Sports Centre.

Samuels, who missed the Friendship final seven days earlier because of work commitments, came off the subs' bench to score the winner in the 75th minute.

But Colts were hardly thinking about Samuels being the goalscoring hero when they brought him on in the 15th minute for Derek Wright who went off with a knee injury after falling awkwardly from a challenge from Pernell Douglas.

Town, too, had an early injury setback when defender Sean Simmons finally went off in the 21st minute after suffering an ankle injury in the first three minutes of the match when he landed heavily on the medal manhole covering near the benches.

And while his replacement, Dean Bailey, suffered a foot injury himself which forced him off in the closing minutes, Samuels was the toast of Colts as they celebrated their first FA triumph in 25 years.

"It's a great feeling, especially since I missed the final last week,'' said Samuels afterwards.

"I've been hearing a lot of lip, about that being the only reason we won, because I wasn't playing. So for us to win this one, and for me to get the goal, is even better.

"This is my first goal this season. Actually my wife bought me some boots for this game, saying she would get me some goal scorers so I could get a goal and it happened today.'' The goal came following a corner on the right which was half-cleared to Samuels deep in the box. His low shot flew inside the post although the diving Jason Smith got a hand to it.

After that Colts had to hold on to their slim lead as Town threw players forward. Veteran striker Carlos Smith came on soon after the goal as Colts replaced the injured Jermel Belboda with the experienced Harrison Trott in the closing minutes.

Fortunately for Colts the ejection of substitute Marvin Belboda in the 89th minute for foul and abusive language came too late to prove costly. Belboda had come on as a replacement for the injured Tito Smith at the start of the second half and started to cause some problems to the Town defence with his strong runs down the right flank.

Darron Simons had the ball in the net for Town four minutes into the second half following a cross from the left which was played back to the far post by McLee Smith. However, Simons was in an offside position when he received the pass.

At the other end Samuels forced a save from the Town 'keeper with a long range shot and Keishon Smith's shot from an angle took a deflection before 'keeper Smith made a good save at the near post.

"Today we didn't play as well as we did last week,'' admitted Colts captain Shannon Burgess afterwards.

"We defended well last week and defended well this week. Jah has scored some important goals for us over the years but he hasn't played much this year so I guess he was overdue.

"He doesn't go a season without scoring an important goal for us, but we don't care who scores, we're all going to enjoy it.'' Presenting the cup to Colts was a special moment for acting Sports Minister Nelson Bascome who couldn't hide his delight. He is a former Colts president.

Today Colts will be honoured, as is now tradition, for their triumph when they head to the Cabinet Office at 11.30 to receive a citation from the Premier.
