Trojans celebrate title with rout

This emphatic victory at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday saw the Trojans capture the First Division title for the first time in six years.

Two goals in the first half put the new champions on their way and a further four in the second half simply demoralised a Hamilton Parish team who appeared to be anxiously looking forward to the end of the season.

Kwame Tucker led the rout with two goals while others game from Jerry Webb, Reggie Tucker, Anthony Burchall and Dwight Basden.

Somerset owed their early celebrations to unpredicatable Devonshire Colts, who crushed Boulevard 5-1 at Frog Lane field. The Blazers came into the day with outside hopes of winning the title but as the Trojans found out in an earlier four-goal loss, Colts were in an uncompromising mood at home.

The relegation battle is still unsettled with three teams trying to avoid joining Hamilton Parish down the chute. The teams still deeply involved in the relegation struggle after yesterday's results are St. David's, St. George's and Hotels.

The Trojans' coach Larry Hunt was the toast of Somerset yesterday and he was not lost for words during the post-game celebrations as players and fans poured champagne down his back.

"Parish came and gave us a rough time from the beginning, but it was a matter of us settling down. Once we did I knew that goals would come and that is what happened,'' said Hunt.

"We wanted to wrap it up today instead of waiting until next week to do so.

We have been consistent all season and that has been the key to us winning the league title. The discipline we have had in our training with Reginald Cann in charge has really paid off and with consistency and discipline in our performance on the field that was all that the team required.'' Somerset had to wait for 26 minutes until they broke the deadlock yesterday.

Kwame Tucker collected a long clearance by centre-back Paul Place and scored from close range.

The second goal came after 44 minutes following a large number of misses by Tucker, Dwight Basden, Jerry Webb and skipper Brian Simons.

Webb, who was busy down the left wing, finally made good after taking a cross from Randy Simmons to score from close in.

Parish managed a few isolated raids with Irving Burgess prominent down the right wing, but as time progressed they started to look depleted and it was no surprise when their opponents dictated play in the second half.

Their best chance came after 40 minutes when substitute Albert Wolfe miskicked from close range after gaining possession when Burgess crossed from the right.

The Parish defence was weakened when centre-back John Nicol was injured after 35 minutes and replaced by Wolfe. And it did not take the home team long to expose the weaknesses.

Within two minutes of the restart, Reggie Tucker blasted the ball home from 15 yards for the third goal and nine minutes later it was 4-0 after Kwame Tucker put home a cross from Webb.

The game had now become a one-sided contest with Parish only offering slight resistance, although during a single raid Elton Caisey forced Winslow Williams in the Trojans goal to make a good save.

After Parish goalkeeper George Fox was forced to make a few diving saves, the Trojans went ahead 5-0 with Anthony Burchall scoring from close in after 62 minutes. Then two minutes later Dwight Basden settled it when he also tapped the ball home from close range after Kwame Tucker created the opening.
