Trojans pay for missed chances
(after extra-time) Somerset and Devonshire Cougars will have to do it all over again after fighting to a 2-2 draw at the Den in yesterday's top FA Cup first round fixture.
But the west enders will be kicking themselves for being in such a predicament as they should have run out easy winners against a reshuffled Cougars outfit that had veteran striker Phillip Clarke playing out of position in the heart of defence.
Indeed Somerset tested the middle early and often with much success, but poor finishing over the first 20 minutes resulted in them lacking anything to show for such domination.
Dwight Basden, Michael Brangman and David Burchall all took turns muffing fine scoring chances, and these would return to haunt the Trojans.
Conversely, Cougars gratefully accepted their initial offering, as youngster Kori Goddard found the target against the run of play in the eighth minute, drawing roars from the home faithful.
Somerset came back to level matters in the 22nd minute, as Burchall made inroads from the right side and sent in an angled blast that defied the clutches of Ricardo Brangman to find the back of the net.
However, before the cheers died down among the visiting crowd Cougars were back in front, as Yusef Williams beat Tim Figureido with another effort that came against the flow.
Action continued to be of an end-to-end nature, with Somerset pulling most of the strings, and the pressure finally paid off as hard-working striker Dwight Basden equalised in the 37th minute.
It appeared both sides had used up all their energy and ideas during the opening stanza, as the second half revealed little in terms of cohesive play.
Sherritt Hewey gave Somerset a scare in the 57th minute as he broke free only to shoot straight at Figureido.
As regulation time neared its conclusion Williams and Basden each muffed opportunities, Williams somehow side-footing over from three yards, while his opposite number fired across the face of goal.
The floodlights were turned on as extra-time was played, but it remained lights-out in the scoring department.
Basden had a sure goal blocked by Shawn Smith after he had beaten Webster Mills on the left side and created a shooting lane six minutes into the extra period.
Smith then missed a chance of his own, his lob of the 'keeper hitting the upright and bouncing away from goal.
The final crack fell to Somerset, with Karl Roberts' free-kick banging down off the crossbar and just missing crossing the line. And despite the ball being forced over by Jermaine Dill, referee Stuart Crockwell adjudged the youngster to have used his hand.
