Under-15s to take on Caymans
Tournament (IYT) Bermuda will play host to Cayman Islands Under-15 cricket team at the end of the month during the Bank of Bermuda Youth Cricket tournament.
Currently touring the Caribbean, Cayman are set to bring with them a 15-member outfit -- along with three officials -- and, according to Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) administrator Mike Glasford, will provide a good test for Bermuda's youngsters.
"They're in Barbados right now playing several matches and they also have a big youth development programme going on in the Caymans right now,'' said Glasford.
"We haven't had any under-15 tournaments for our youngsters in quite some time and this will provide a test as to where our future lies in international cricket. It's all a part of the developmental phase of our cricket.'' Bermuda has been largely absent from the international scene as far as the junior level is concerned, especially since the collapse of the IYT, which has not been staged since 1997.
The upcoming series of five matches -- two involving the national youth team -- Glasford said could go a way toward bringing back a similar type of event involving various countries among the Americas region.
"This tour here is just a start of what we hope will grow into something much larger, that within the next two years we will have a tournament involving countries based in our region,'' said Glasford.
"We're trying to bring the IYT back to our region, because there has been very little youth cricket since it stopped in 1997. But with Shell and BF&M coming back on board it has given incentive for us to try and create something that involves all the countries.'' The opening encounter is set for July 28, at Southampton Oval featuring the visitors and the Bermuda Under-15 Select. Bermuda will be using split squads during their two matches, which has them competing for the Sir Henry Tucker trophy, the other being at Devonshire Rec. on August 2.
Currently 36 players are involved in training ahead of the tour, ranging from age 11 to 15, with six having already played in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, the bank expressed its excitement at being able to sponsor such an event.
"Team sports are an excellent way for young Bermudians to learn how to work with their peers towards a common goal, while getting some physical exercise,'' said Karen Madeiros, events and promotions officer at the Bank of Bermuda.
This will mark the second time teams have competed for the Sir Henry Tucker trophy. Sir Henry, who died in 1986, was a former general manager of the Bank of Bermuda and was passionate about the sport and established a cricket foundation.
Other matches scheduled have Cayman taking on an East Select, July 29 (Devonshire Rec), Hamilton Parish, July 31 (Sea Breeze Oval), and a West Select, August 1 (Southampton Oval). All matches will be 40 overs affairs, starting at 12 noon, with free admission to the public.
