Vallis, Carr on course for all-Bermuda final

showdown yesterday as both eased through their quarter-finals in the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club.

Vallis, winner in 1992, made the most of home course advantage as he dismissed Port Royal's Henry Ascento four and three, just a day after Ascento had upset defending champion Mark Dupuy.

Marine policeman Carr, meanwhile, won the battle of Bermuda bobbies as he got past Dave Purcell three and two.

Two Americans now stand in the way of an all-Bermuda final.

In today's semi-final, Carr, winner in 1997, takes on Bill Jenks, while Vallis meets Stan Lee. Jenks needed two extra holes to quash the challenge of William Link while Arkansas-based Lee scored a three and two win over Bermuda's Eddie Marshall.

Today's two winners will meet in tomorrow's 36-hole final.

Yesterday's longest match saw Dupuy taken to the 24th hole before beating Dick Blackburn in the Championship flight consolation.

In the ladies' final to be played today, young medallist Laura Robinson faces Shirley Wildi in an all-Bermuda affair.

Robinson defeated Susan Holland three and one in yesterday's semi, while Wildi was a three and two winner over Valerie Nearon.

In the hunt: Mid Ocean Club member Robert Vallis defeated fellow Bermudian Henry Ascento yesterday to maintain his challenge for a second Amateur Match Play title.
