Van Putten turns the screws
Bermuda Senior Golf Championship by two strokes.
Van Putten shot a one-under-par final-round 69 to overhaul overnight leader Sam Murray at Belmont GC.
The champion, who set the early pace with an opening-round 75, slipped back on Saturday with a 79 to trail Murray by two shots going into the final day.
But he turned that two-shot deficit into a two-shot victory margin with Murray's tournament-best 73 not enough to hold off his challenge.
Shirley Wildi was the runaway winner of the women's competition, finishing 24 strokes ahead of runner-up Diana Diel.
Wildi returned consistent rounds of 73 and 74 this weekend to add to an opening-round 84.
Diel snatched second spot from Glenda Todd, who had held the runner-up position going into yesterday's round.
Hubert Smith and Judy Kitson received prizes as the low net winners.
Kim Swan will have to qualify today if he hopes to compete in the Xerox BC Open in Point Grey, Vancouver, which starts on Thursday.
Swan failed to make the cut in the Payless Open in Victoria, which ended yesterday with Mike Colandro of Massachusetts taking the $18,000 winner's cheque after the fifth play-off hole.
Today, Swan will be among 100 fighting for 20 remaining spots in the 156-player tournament.
