Vasco look for three in a row
tackle Boulevard for the second time in less than a week, as competition resumes in the Martonmere Cup tonight at Devonshire Rec.
The initial meeting between the two sides occurred last Saturday night during the Charity Cup and saw Vasco sprint to a 3-0 lead, before fading late and having to settle for an odd goal 3-2 victory.
However, captain Earl Richardson insisted that first meeting offered no indication of what might happen tonight (9.00 p.m.).
"That was the first game and you can't really count all your eggs judging from that,'' said Richardson, an attack-minded left-back for the Portuguese club.
"This one here will probably tell the story moreso. We have a game plan and we're just going to stick to that and see the outcome, whether good or bad.'' Certainly Vasco cannot be criticised for a lack of firepower, having scored 10 goals in two matches, including seven during Tuesday night's thrashing of hapless St.George's Colts.
However, weaknesses among the midfield were highlighted by the Blazers as they were able to control a lot of possession during the previous contest.
Richardson, however, did not see the possession game of Boulevard as causing problems, inferring his side were capable of matching any in terms of talent and skill.
"Well it seems as if they match our play, really, because our game is based around the same thing and we have guys that are talented enough to do the same thing,'' he said.
"But I feel the difference is that our team have more venom in our play, which allows us to overcome teams that do the same thing as us. Right now our team is a very good team of very talented players, capable of performing at the highest level.'' A draw would qualify Vasco for the semi-finals of the competition, while a narrow win by Boulevard likely would mean both going through, as St.George's would have to beat Boulevard by a wide margin when the pair meet next week.
Yet Richardson stressed only victory was on the minds of his troops.
"Right now a draw is out of my vocabulary and out of my team's vocabulary. I think a draw would be like a loss to us.'' This evening's opening affair pits PHC against a Dandy Town outfit making their first appearance of the season.
PHC fought North Village to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night, and need a win to confirm their place in the semi-finals, while a win by the Hornets would automatically place them in the next round.
Town were hit by the transfer market, losing key players in the form of Anthony Wilson, Peter Sampson, Khari Sharrieff and Ascento Russell and it will be interesting to see just how returning coach Mark Trott fills the missing pieces.
