Veteran Simmons fires late winner
A goal by veteran centre-back Wendell (Woodgate) Simmons nine minutes from time gave Commercial Division side Fire Services an upset victory over their Second Division opponents in this FA Cup tie game at Prospect.
Hard-working forward Troy Furbert provided the spadework for Simmons to hammer the ball home from just inside the penalty box only three minutes after Prospect had drawn level through Andrew Bissell.
Simmons led an all-out attack by Fire Services after the scores became deadlocked at 3-3 when he left his defensive position, and the move brought dividends within a span of three minutes.
Fire Serives fought off a spirited fightback by Prospect in the second half.
Trailing 3-1 when play re-started, Prospect pinned down their opponents for long periods and it took some heroic saves by Shawn Grant in the Fire Services goal to prevent Prospect from taking complete command.
Prospect took charge early when John Richmond netted after 10 minutes, but they allowed Fire Services to take a decisive lead by the half with goals by Simmons after 14 minutes, Vic Ball after 28 minutes and Troy Furbert after 42 minutes.
Early second-half pressure saw Prospect eventually pull two goals back through skipper Dwayne Leverock and Bissell, and it took two superb saves by goalkeeper Grant to stop them from taking charge as Fire Services began to tire.
But Simmons and Furbert dug deep and teamed up to provide the goal that proved decisive.
Five minutes from time Peter Philpott was denied the equaliser for Prospect when his blast from 12 yards forced Grant to make a sensational stop with his left boot, putting the shot around the post for a corner.
