Village give St. David's reality check

Just a week after upsetting Vasco, St. David's crashed to their biggest lead loss as the Red Devils moved two points clear at the top of the First Division.

The visitors did well to prevent Village from taking the lead until the 19th minute, but once they got the first goal it opened the floodgates as the home team held a comfortable 4-0 lead at the half.

Despite not being at their strongest, with goalkeeper Dwayne Adams sitting on the bench, Kentoine Jennings missing and midfielder Kevin Jennings playing a left-back in a re-organised defence, Village continued to look the more fluent of the two teams as player/coach Andrew Bascome made a rare appearance in midfield.

The match was only 25 seconds old when St. David's 'keeper Sydney Minors produced his first of many saves to deny Philip Clarke a sure goal after he broke clear of the defence.

Four minutes later, Minors was in action again after a corner on the right by Elliott Jennings saw the ball break to Bascome at the far post. His shot was blocked by the 'keeper, who was injured in a scramble for the loose ball, which Eugene Simmons drove over the bar from six yards.

Bascome, playing with plenty of energy and enthusiasm, showed flashes of his old self as he controlled things from midfield. A perfect pass behind the St.

David's defence in the 10th minute created a perfect opening for Sean Dill but Minors blocked his point-blank shot.

Minors was finally beaten when Dill's volley smashed against the underside of the crossbar and Simmons followed up to plant the rebound into the back of the net.

Scoring became a regular thing after that with further goals coming in the 21st, 33rd and 42nd minutes as Village effectively eliminated any St. David's hopes of a second straight upset.

Kevin Jennings helped set up the second goal when he sent Clarke away down the left to start another raid. Clarke's firm shot was parried by Minors and Elliott Jennings followed up at the far post to unselfishly cross back into the middle where Clarke side-footed home from close range.

Clarke added a second in the 33rd minute after being put clear of the defence and keeping his cool to beat Minors with a low shot. Elliott Jennings was equally composed three minutes before the break to drill a low shot past the advancing Minors.

A fifth goal came just three minutes into the second half when Bascome collected a pass near the edge of the St. David's penalty area, stepped around two challenges and then curled a left-footed shot past the 'keeper.

Despite territorial advantage, Village did not add to their lead until the closing minutes when Paul Simmons, a second-half substitute, scored with a header from a corner in the 87th minute.

Minutes earlier, Minors showed his promise again by tipping a Paul Simmons scorcher over the bar for a corner.
