Village hoist first trophy in four years

North Village ended a four-year wait for a major award when they came from behind to snatch the Friendship Trophy at National Stadium yesterday.

Seyoum Tuzo's 12th minute opener was cancelled out by veteran Elliott Jennings's equaliser a minute into first half injury time and then Nakia Smith slammed home the winner with just 10 minutes left in the match.

Village last enjoyed cup success in 1993 when they beat Devonshire Colts 2-1 in the Friendship final as Elliott Jennings also scored the first Village goal that night at National Stadium.

The club's longest serving player -- it's 17 years since his first team debut -- was inspirational in their fightback after Tuzo's volley from the right side of the penalty box dipped under the crossbar to catch goalkeeper Dwayne Adams out of position.

But it didn't take Village long to get going after that initial shock although they had to wait much longer before getting back on level terms. Village, with Kevin Jennings lending support to attacks down the right side and Bell, Nakia Smith and Kacy Simons working hard in midfield, kept Town under pressure with a free kick by Kevin Jennings finding Elliott Jennings inside the box before Kirk Butterfield cleared for a corner.

Moments later a shot from outside the box by Irving Romaine was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Lightbourne.

At the other end Village's defence, led by Irving Romaine and Michael Hansey in the middle, kept Town's strike pair Carlos Smith and Darron Simons under wraps.

Nakia Smith wasted the best chance in the 33rd when he put a low left-footed shot wide of the near post from right in front of goal. Butterfield blasted just wide at the other end after Reggie Tucker laid the ball into his path from a free kick by Lionel Furbert.

Romaine became the first booking of the game in the 44th minute, for a clumsy tackle on Devarr Boyles.

Village finally did find the net in injury time when a series of passes resulted in Nakia Smith's pass finding Elliott Jennings on the far side of the box and he calmly slid the ball past Lightbourne. Larance Durham was booked for kicking the ball away after the goal.

There was a booking frenzy by referee Stuart Crockwell early in the second half as four players received yellow cards in the space of six minutes -- Nakia Smith, Kofi Dill, Carlos Smith and Butterfield.

The game remained in the balance going into the latter stages and Smith almost settled it for Village in the 68th minute when he met a cross from the right by Simons but put his diving header over the top. Romaine, too, headed over the bar.

Smith made amends in the 80th minute when he connected with a cross from the right and blasted past Lightbourne from close range.

A delighted Elliott Jennings said afterwards: "When these guys put their minds to playing football they can play football. In the last half of the season we have been trying to play to a pattern, so we just kept our shape and kept the ball moving.

"We did all the things the coach (Leroy Wilson) could ask for in the first half so we just had to hang in there and try to get the winner.'' Town had striker Carlos Smith carried off with a groin pull after a wayward shot in the 88th minute.
