Wade strikes with last-gasp winner -- Final kick of the match earns Village dramatic cup victory
North Village 2 Dev.Colts 1 (after extra time) Substitute Damon Wade popped up with a dramatic injury time winner for North Village in the FA Cup final at the National Sports Centre yesterday just seconds after an announcement came across the PA system that the replay would take place on Wednesday evening.
It wasn't something either team were looking forward to after both appeared physically drained long before the 120 minutes had expired. And it was perhaps no surprise that two of the freshest pairs of legs in the Village team, Wade and the other sub Elliott Jennings, should combine to produce the winner and give them their first FA Cup triumph in 11 years.
Jennings, who recently announced he would retire after yesterday's final, came on in the 84th minute for his final appearance for the club. And after threatening with some telling passes, he produced the move that finally broke the deadlock a minute into injury time.
Jennings swung in a cross from the left, his nephew Kevin Jennings headed it back at the far post and when Sergio Goater failed to convert, Wade saw an opening and tucked the ball home from close range.
So late did the goal come that Colts did not even have time to kick off before referee Gary Cook, also in his last match before retiring, blew the final whistle, much to the delight of the Village players and fans.
"We wanted to win it today, it looked as though it would go to a replay and I really wasn't looking forward to a replay,'' said a relieved Village coach Kenny Thompson afterwards.
"It's been a very long season and I've been looking forward to this day for a couple of reasons. ..of course to try to win the FA Cup and also to kick back and relax.
"At the end of the day it was good that we left it so late, we didn't give them a chance to respond.'' Colts, making their third straight appearance in the final and aiming to defend the title they won last season, got off to a good start when they took the lead in the 24th minute through Trinidadian midfielder Wayne Henry who connected from Marvin Belboda's free kick on the left and scored with a neat glancing header inside the near post.
But it was Henry who conceded the free kick which led to the Village equaliser nine minutes later, when he was booked for a foul. From that kick by Kentoine Jennings just inside the Colts half, Kevin Jennings got off a spectacular volley at the far post which the diving Troy Hall in the Colts goal could only parry. Dwight Warren quickly followed up to score from the rebound.
The second half was largely scrappy as both teams started to tire in the heat.
Colts made a double substitution early in the half with college student Quincey Aberdeen and Clevon Hill coming on for Ricky Saltus and Wayne Henry.
Village then countered by replacing Jamaul Boyles with Michael Hansey and Wade for Outerbridge in the 68th and 70th minutes.
Those substitutions began to make a difference as Hansey was busy on the left flank while Wade boosted the attack.
Village had strong claims for a penalty in the 83rd minute turned down by Cook, who probably felt Warren over-reacted to a challenge from Hall after he tried to get past him.
Village finished regulation time looking the more likely to score as Colts spent a lot of time defending. Wade fed Kevin Jennings on the edge of the box but he shot straight at the 'keeper.
The few chances that came in extra-time were also wasted as Belboda put a long range free kick past the far post, before Village's Wade shot straight at Hall after a series of short passes on the edge of the box involving Elliott and Kevin Jennings had set him up perfectly.
A replay was looming when Wade made amends by scoring the dramatic winner.
