Warren hat-trick sinks Town
If last night's Martonmere Cup semi-final between Dandy Town and Boulevard was a movie it would have been called `True Grit'.
For it was exactly that quality shown by Boulevard which enabled them to battle through and emerge victorious, claiming a final spot alongside North Village.
Twice the Blazers fell a goal down, but on each occasion they clawed their way back to level terms before finally taking the lead and keeping it.
Rescuing the back-of-town club on each instance was Dwight Warren, who registered a hat-trick, scoring once in the first half and twice in the second.
Warren's goals nullified strikes by Darron Simons and Reggie Tucker and put paid to the Hornets hopes of earning their first final berth since 1990.
However, while Warren grabbed the individual glory, coach Donnie Hill regarded it as a true team effort.
"I tell you it was some great teamwork that pulled us through, but those two goals we gave up in the first half made our job hard,'' said Hill, about to embark on his first Martonmere Cup final as coach. "The second half we came back and played better and more intelligently, kept fighting to the end and it paid off for us.'' Town drew first blood in the sixth minute, as a lightning quick attack along the right flank saw Simons collect a cross in the penalty area and deliver a searing blast that gave goalkeeper Mitchell Steede no chance.
But the advantage would be short-lived.
Lethargy among the Hornets' defence in clearing a bouncing ball in the 24th minute allowed Warren to seize the moment and rifle home a low drive through a maze of players, the ball nestling in the low right corner.
Town regained the lead four minutes from half-time, scoring against the run of play as Damon Ming crossed for an unmarked Tucker to nod in from close range.
Again the lead would not last.
Warren scrambled home a muffed chance by team-mate Kenny Hill in the 72nd minute and 12 minutes later scorched the winner, a near carbon copy of his first goal, low and hard into the corner.
"Dwight's a great player, one who has his head on right, is always in tune with the game and he did a good job for us tonight,'' said Hill, acknowledging Warren's contribution.

St. George's All-Stars 3 Mariners 1 A spirited tussle preceded the main event with St. George's rising to snatch a 3-1 victory over Mariners to claim the Commercial Division League Cup B.
Veteran striker Cal Rayner delivered the goods for the East Enders with a pair of strikes in extra-time, after 90 minutes had failed to separate the two sides.
Sinclair Smith gave St. George's a dream start, scoring in the ninth minute, but Mariners fought back with Craig Dixon levelling matters five minutes into the second half.
Rayner then replied with tallies in the 91st and 111th minutes to seal the win and the title.
