Wellman leapt an indoor personal best 17.27 metres (56 feet, eight inches) and seemed on course for a bronze medal until Latvian Maris Bruziks went 17.36 when he appeared to have foul jumped. Bruziks' jump was appealed by Bermuda manager Brian Dowling but it was ruled unsuccessful by the organising committee.

Bermuda's other competitor at the indoor championships at the Toronto SkyDome, was sprinter Troy Douglas. He failed to qualify for the 400 metres semifinals after placing fourth in his heat on Friday night.
